The Healthcare Assistant (Band
3) is a key member of the multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality support to patients receiving systemic anti-cancer treatment within the Chemotherapy Day Unit. The post holder will deliver direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses, ensuring patients receive compassionate, safe, and person-centred care throughout their treatment journey. The role includes supporting patients with activities of daily living where required, undertaking delegated clinical duties such as baseline observations, venepuncture (if trained and competent), specimen collection, and assisting with patient monitoring during treatment.

The Healthcare Assistant will help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment, adhering to infection prevention, health and safety, and quality standards. The post holder will contribute to the smooth running of the unit by preparing treatment areas, stocking supplies, supporting patient flow, assisting with appointments and transport arrangements, and escalating concerns promptly to the nursing team. They will provide emotional support to patients and families, recognising the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Working collaboratively with nursing, medical, pharmacy, and administrative colleagues, the Healthcare Assistant will help ensure the delivery of an efficient, safe, and high-quality chemotherapy service.

  • Provide high-quality, compassionate care to patients attending the Chemotherapy Day Unit under the supervision of registered nurses.
  • Support patients throughout their treatment journey, promoting dignity, comfort, and wellbeing.
  • Undertake delegated clinical duties including recording observations, measuring height and weight, collecting specimens, and performing venepuncture or cannulation where trained and competent.
  • Assist with monitoring patients during treatment and promptly escalation any concerns or changes in condition to the nursing team.
  • Prepare clinical areas and treatment spaces, ensuring equipment is clean, stocked, and ready for use.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, cleanliness, and health and safety within the unit.
  • Support patient flow by preparing patients for treatment, assisting with admissions and discharges, and coordinating transport where required.
  • Accurately document care delivered and maintain patient records in line with Trust policies.
  • Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and relatives, recognising the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, medical, pharmacy, and administrative teams to ensure safe and efficient delivery of chemotherapy services.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, mandatory training, and ongoing professional development.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and patient-centred environment for all service users.
