The Office of Inclusion and Social Accountability (now known as Equity and Social Accountability) was created in 2022 with a focus on health equity, accessibility, and Indigenous Health. During that time, LHSC committed to, and remains committed to, creating an inclusive and safe environment by dismantling systems of oppression, discrimination, racism and bias, while addressing social determinants of health and advancing truth and reconciliation.

The Equity and Social Accountability team play a critical role in advancing just, accessible, respectful, and culturally safe care for all. The Equity and Social Accountability portfolio is responsible for driving organizational change that improves patient experiences, workforce well-being, health outcomes, and accountability to the communities served. They support the integration of equity, human rights, accessibility, anti-Black racism, and inclusion principles into organizational policies, practices, programs, and decision-making processes.

The Black Health team was established in May 2023 as an integral part of the portfolio in alignment with the Ontario Health Equity, Inclusion, Diversity, and Anti-racism (EID-AR) framework and the Black Health Plan for Ontario which recognizes there are many inequities in healthcare that exist for Black (African, Caribbean, and Black Canadian) peoples. The work of the Black Health team has focused on identifying and dismantling systemic, institutional, and attitudinal barriers.

Through engagement, consultation , and collaboration with Black individuals and community partners, LHSC seeks to build trusting relationships to learn more about their healthcare experiences and how services can be improved to better meet their unique needs.

The Black Health team is committed to working with all members of Team LHSC as collective collective learning is advanced on issues important to Black patients, families and community members and build our capacity to provide care that is culturally relevant and culturally sensitive to the needs of this and all equity-denied groups.

Reporting to the Director, Equity and Social Accountability, the Manager, Equity and Black Health Strategy directs, controls and evaluates the delivery of department services. They are responsible for translating decisions of the program leadership into operations, by utilizing relationship management and working with internal and external partners to achieve the necessary outcomes.
