Senior Word Press Engineer

We’re looking for an experienced Full Stack Word Press Engineer to join a high-performing, distributed development team delivering new features, functionality and ongoing improvements across enterprise-level Word Press platforms.

You’ll primarily focus on a large-scale, high-traffic digital news platform, while also contributing to shared services and tools that support multiple well-known media brands.

You’ll be part of an established and collaborative technology team where innovation is encouraged and good ideas move quickly. The environment is dynamic and adaptable, giving you the freedom to build purposeful, high-impact software without unnecessary bureaucracy.

You will:

• Develop and maintain features for an enterprise-scale Word Press platform
• Build and maintain shared plugins used across multiple Word Press properties
• Develop microservices and JavaScript applications that integrate alongside Word Press
• Optimise performance, improving response times, database queries and Core Web Vitals
• Contribute to architectural and technology decisions with a focus on scalability and maintainability
• Independently manage workload in a fast-paced environment
• Debug and resolve issues raised by editorial and support teams

• 8+ years’ experience in Word Press development
• Strong expertise in the Word Press and Gutenberg ecosystem
• Experience building custom Gutenberg blocks, RSS feeds and WP-JSON API endpoints
• Advanced HTML, CSS and PHP skills with a focus on performance
• Strong front-end JavaScript experience, including React
• Solid understanding of Git and version control best practices
• Experience working within Agile environments (e.g., JIRA)
• Ability to deliver full-stack projects independently from concept to deployment
• Strong understanding of Core Web Vitals and website performance optimisation
• Confident communicator within distributed teams
• Strong debugging skills, including Chrome Dev Tools
• A proactive, solutions-focused mindset

• Word Press VIP platform experience
• Building Word Press at enterprise scale (caching, query optimisation, WP Cron)
• Monitoring tools such as New Relic or Kibana
• Type Script and Webpack
• WP-CLI and custom command creation
• AWS services (S3, Lambda, EC2, API Gateway)
• Publishing to Apple News
• CI tools such as Circle
  
  CI, Git Hub Actions or Team City
• Writing ad-hoc Bash or Python scripts
• Subscription platform integrations (e.g., Piano, Zephr)
• Willingness to travel to London occasionally for team meet-ups
