Director, Head of Strategy and Architecture, Digital Engineering Services and Solutions

Main Purpose of the Role

The Head of Strategy and Architecture, Digital Engineering Services & Solutions (DES) is responsible for articulating, developing, leading and driving the strategic direction and technical architecture of the Digital Engineering Services & Solutions department.

Overseeing Digital Engineering Services & Solutions across EMEA Bank and International Securities (plus 15 other countries), the role will lead strategic plans, ensure alignment with MUFG’s Medium Term Business Plans, and design robust technical roadmaps that transform the department into a modern, digital‑centric architecture. The holder will influence C‑level and Board executives, manage indirect leadership of strategy and architecture leads, and play a key role in global digital transformation initiatives.

• Lead the design, development, operation and management of the department’s strategy and architectural roadmaps.
• Develop short, medium and long‑term strategic goals, including vision and mission.
• Collaborate with business units, operational teams, application owners and enterprise architecture to shape, document and execute the department strategy.
• Maintain a clear architecture vision and a 3‑5 year roadmap with key milestones.
• Articulate and align senior stakeholders on strategic direction, communicating progress toward milestones.
• Develop strategic measures to monitor progress, establish measurable goals, and analyze KPI performance.
• Champion adoption of the department’s strategic roadmaps across the business.
• Continuously review the strategy to ensure relevance and identify opportunities for refinement.
• Work with Digital Engineering Services and Solution Pillar Leads to define roadmaps and feed into the wider department strategy.
• Contribute to and align with Enterprise Architecture.
• Represent the department at the Architectural Review Board with authority to approve designs.
• Lead a team of Strategy Leads and Architects to shape the technical landscape.
• Regularly assess and improve the technology landscape, identifying innovation and optimisation opportunities.
• Interpret regulatory, security and best‑practice requirements and translate them into business‑aligned engineering requirements.
• Collaborate with industry partners, vendors and the wider technology ecosystem to leverage external expertise.
• Conduct market research and competitive analysis to identify emerging technologies and trends.

Essential:

• 10+ years in technology strategy definition and business case development, applying strategic frameworks and tools.
• Extensive experience in Senior Strategy within Technology, Infrastructure and Operations (Service Management).
• Proven capability to design modern, digital architecture and strategy for current and future technology advancements.
• Experience establishing, creating, and delivering strategic digital transformation in global organisations.
• Track record of developing and implementing long‑term technology strategy and roadmaps for Operations (Service Management) and Infrastructure aligned with business goals.
• Proven success in collaborating with senior stakeholders and influencing at C‑suite level.
• Strategic thinking and visionary skills to co‑develop and drive the department’s technical vision and roadmap.
• Expertise in IT strategy and enterprise architecture frameworks and tools.
• Experience managing a team of Strategy Leads and Architects to develop service roadmaps.
• Able to translate complex technical problems into non‑technical terms and provide clear strategic direction.
• Experience with complex digital transformation programmes, multi‑disciplinary teams, and varying architecture layers.

• Deep knowledge of Financial Services technologies:
  Cloud, Platforms, Telecommunications & Networks, Digital Workplace, Data Management, and Artificial Intelligence (including GenAI).
• Proven experience in enterprise architecture, IT strategy and large‑scale IT transformation.
• Strong understanding of business models, operational processes, and the application of technology for transformation.
