Are you passionate about using AI to solve real business problems and create smarter ways of working?

At GTR, we're looking for an innovative and technically skilled AI Engineer to help build the next generation of AI-powered solutions that transform how our people access information, complete tasks and make decisions.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in expanding GTR's AI capabilities, designing and deploying intelligent agents that improve efficiency, enhance self‑service access to information and deliver measurable business value. Working with cutting‑edge Microsoft technologies, you'll help shape how AI is adopted safely, responsibly and effectively across one of the UK's largest train operating companies.

About the Role

As an AI Engineer, you will design, develop and deploy AI agents using Microsoft Copilot Studio and Microsoft Fabric technologies, creating solutions that help teams interact with data, streamline processes and access insights more easily.

Working closely with business stakeholders, you'll take the time to understand user needs, operational challenges and end‑to‑end processes before translating them into intelligent, user‑friendly AI solutions. From conversational experiences and workflow automation to secure access to trusted business data, you'll be responsible for ensuring every solution is practical, scalable and aligned to GTR's governance standards.

You'll be joining our central Data & AI function at a pivotal time as we accelerate our use of AI to support better decision making, operational efficiency and self‑service insight across the business.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Designing, building and enhancing AI agents using Microsoft Copilot Studio.
  • Developing conversational experiences, workflows and integrations with GTR systems, processes and data assets.
  • Working closely with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into effective AI solutions.
  • Building agents that provide safe, secure and governed access to business information and insights.
  • Applying robust governance, testing and deployment processes to ensure solutions are reliable and auditable.
  • Collaborating with Data Engineers, Architects and platform teams to integrate AI solutions with Microsoft Fabric and Data Hub environments.
  • Evaluating different AI approaches and recommending solutions based on business value, scalability and maintainability.
  • Monitoring agent performance, user adoption and effectiveness, driving continuous improvement over time.
  • Supporting the responsible, secure and sustainable use of AI across the organisation.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical expertise with excellent stakeholder engagement skills and a genuine enthusiasm for applying AI to real‑world business challenges.

You Will Bring:
  • Experience designing and delivering AI agents, copilots or AI‑enabled automation solutions within an enterprise environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Copilot Studio and the wider Microsoft AI ecosystem.
  • Experience gathering requirements, mapping business processes and translating user needs into practical AI solutions.
  • Strong solution design capabilities, balancing user experience with security, governance and operational robustness.
  • Experience working with enterprise data platforms, ideally Microsoft Fabric and related technologies.
  • An understanding of AI governance, permissions management, access controls and operational best practice.
  • Experience supporting solutions through testing, release management and support life cycles.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build effective relationships across technical and business teams.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
