PurposeThe purpose of this role is to lead the development of BMJ Group’s journals platform, focusing on how readers discover, access and use journal content. The main goal during the 12-month maternity cover is to lead the migration of our remaining journals portfolio over to a BMJ-built front end platform. A major part of this work involves rebuilding and migrating BMJ’s identity and access management systems to provide a seamless reader experience.
Responsibilities- Lead platform migration: run the transition of BMJ’s hybrid journal websites to the new front end platform, including direct responsibility for the identity and access management build and migration.
- Direct matrixed teams: coordinate and guide a large cross-functional matrixed team that includes product managers, a UX designer, developers, testers, and subject-matter experts
- Own the product development process: manage the entire product development process from initial discovery, through to development, launch and measuring success against clear KPIs.
- Understand our readers and customers: utilise user research, business analysis, and web metrics (such as Google Analytics) to ensure BMJ’s platform improvements cater to reader and customer needs.
- Support internal teams: liaise with internal teams such as customer services, entitlements and usage, sales, marketing, publishing, editorial, on BMJ’s platform migration plans
- Product management experience: experience working as a product manager building and optimising digital products, working with UX designers, developers and testers.
- Academic publishing experience: experience working within an STM journal publishing environment (although similar publishing/media industries will be considered)
- Access, authentication and authorisation knowledge: direct, technical understanding of scholarly publishing authentication methods, authorisation models, and how journal content product bundling works
- Technical infrastructure familiarity: a solid grasp of the technologies behind institutional access, including IP authentication, proxy servers, ISPs, and link-resolving tools.
- Platform delivery: a track record of building, improving or migration journal hosting platforms or similar academic digital products.
- Remote team working: experience working with remote development teams
- Communication skills: ability to communicate and explain technical concepts to non-technical colleagues
- Technical experience: basic familiarity with HTML, XML, content management systems, wire framing tools,
- Product tools: hands-on experience with product management tools such as JIRA, Trello, Salesforce.
- Industry standards: understanding of digital publishing conventions and standards such as WCAG accessibility standards.
