Consultant, Advanced Communication Technologies The Role's Purpose

Innovation Consultants are at the heart of Plexal’s innovation and technology consulting services, and this role is ideal for individuals with a specific focus on advanced communications technologies.
As an Innovation Consultant, you will act as a subject matter expert, supporting organisations to research and understand how Advanced Communication Technologies are developing and what this means for their strategic planning. The type of work that this role touches can range from satellite communication to rapid 5G deployment and everything in between. You will also support horizon scanning activities, helping clients anticipate future developments in the space.
This role is suited to individuals with strong analytical capability, core radio and base communication knowledge and an interest in how the technology field is transforming. You will be deployable across a wide range of client projects, providing expert input wherever relevant.

• Shape insights and act as a subject matter expert on advanced communications and related emerging technology sectors.
• Scope research questions, select appropriate methodologies, analyse findings, and support production of high‑impact reports and presentations.
• Monitor technology trends, market needs and wider drivers across telecommunications, RF systems, satellite communications, free-space optics, secure communications, spectrum and network resilience.
• Assess technology propositions, interrogate vendor claims and evaluate robustness, risks, opportunities and trade‑offs with appropriate technical rigour.
• Help clients engage effectively with the emerging technology ecosystem, including startups, scaleups, researchers, corporate partners and public‑sector stakeholders.
• Support the design and delivery of innovation programmes, challenge‑led activity, pilots and practical technology evaluation.
• Manage inputs across several work streams, maintaining high standards of delivery, documentation and stakeholder communication.

• Strong research and analytical skills, including methodological thinking and the ability to frame ambiguous problems.
• Ability to interrogate vendor claims and assess the robustness of relevant technologies.
• Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear insights for nontechnical audiences.
• High‑quality written communication suitable for advisory work and strategic recommendations.
• Strong influencing, facilitation and stakeholder‑management skills.
• Ability to work proactively and independently within a matrix environment

• Background in advanced communication technologies, research, academia, innovation or emerging technology.
• Experience conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research and producing high‑quality analytical outputs.
• Experience contributing to collaborative delivery teams.
• Ability to provide an outside in perspective on emerging advanced comms trends, market needs and technologies.

• Energised by solving complex problems and exploring emerging technologies.
• Passion for cyber security and curiosity about AI’s role in shaping the future threat landscape.
