The Environmental Liability Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting business within the remit of the Environmental Liability product line which sits within the International Casualty team in London. This role involves working alongside the Environmental Liability Senior Underwriter to continue to develop Markel International’s Environmental Liability proposition, including extending the distribution.

** What you’ll be doing:
*** Work with class Senior Underwriter, wider team, actuarial and other parts of the business to implement the underwriting strategy and monitor progress and developments
* Assessing, pricing and underwriting new and renewal risks in accordance with underwriting guidelines, appetite and strategy.
* Champion continuous improvements and continually work with the team to improve end to end process and data
* Confidently and positively demonstrate the field of our chosen underwriting approach
* Positively contribute towards the team’s underwriting strategy
* Attend regular broker and client meetings and travel to represent Markel as required
* Develop strong relationships with existing and new brokers
* Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
* Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markel’s exposure
* Providing underwriting support to overseas offices and handling of referral approvals
* Work with the Director of International Casualty and Senior Underwriter on portfolio management
* Actively seek business opportunities in accordance with plan
* Ownership or assistance in completing project work

Skills:

*** Have a detailed understanding of the Environmental Liability market
* Demonstrate strong numerical and analytical ability
* Ability to interpret technical environmental reports, site assessments and operational risk information
* Prior underwriting experience is preferred
* Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
* Have excellent communication skills
* Have a network of London and international distribution channels
