About

The Role

Location: E9 5TD
. A full, valid UK driving licence is essential for this role. You will be required to drive between sites and transport medication, specimens, and equipment, so this is a non‑negotiable requirement.

Days of Working: Variable shifts dependent upon business needs - 7am to 7pm.

To provide a safe, efficient, and responsive portering service across ELFT sites, ensuring the smooth movement of goods, equipment, consumables, and non-clinical items as stated. The role supports the overall delivery of facilities services and contributes to a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

General Portering & Site Support
  • Delivering and collecting goods, consumables, equipment, materials, and Trust property across site.
  • Transporting cleaning stock, paper products, catering items, and supplies to wards and departments.
  • Moving furniture, equipment, and undertaking room set‑ups or layout changes.
  • Responding to Helpdesk requests promptly and accurately.
  • Supporting catering and domestic teams with reasonable delivery and collection tasks.
Environmental & Waste Duties
  • Removing clinical and non‑clinical waste in line with Trust waste procedures, maintaining safe segregation.
  • Carrying out light cleaning duties (external areas, spillages, bin areas, entrances, courtyards).
  • Assisting with linen transportation and curtain changes.
Contractor Escorting (Secure Site Protocols)
  • Receiving and signing in contractors; checking  high‑visibility clothing.
  • Conducting or supporting tool inventory checks.
  • Escorting contractors throughout the site, ensuring safety, tool control, and security compliance.
  • Reporting unsafe behaviour or protocol breaches immediately.
Pharmacy, Medication & Specimen Transport (Driving Tasks)
  • Collecting and delivering medication securely, following chain‑of‑custody rules.
  • Collecting sealed specimens and delivering them to authorised holding or laboratory locations.
  • Maintaining vehicles, completing logs, and ensuring safe, timely deliveries.
Operational Expectations
  • Remaining contactable via site radio at all times during shifts.
  • Using portering equipment safely and reporting defects.
  • Participating in meetings, briefings, and mandatory training.
  • Upholding confidentiality, security protocols, OCS values, and maintaining professional behaviour.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • A full, valid UK driving licence is essential for this role. You will be required to drive between sites and transport medication, specimens, and equipment, so this is a non‑negotiable requirement.
  • Must have the Right to Work in the UK.
  • Will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check due to the secure healthcare environment.
  • Experience in a similar role is desirable, but we also welcome applicants with a strong willingness to learn.
  • A solid understanding of health & safety practices and the ability to follow site procedures.
  • Strong communication skills, with the confidence to interact professionally with staff, patients, and contractors.
  • Physically capable of performing manual handling tasks, including moving equipment, supplies, and furniture.
