Job Objectives

Provides technical expertise and manual skill in the inspection, servicing, and repair of the district's buildings, grounds, equipment, and furnishings. Performs routine housekeeping duties to protect and preserve the school building and furnishings. Maintains high standards to ensure that a safe and orderly environment is maintained for educational and recreational activities. Uses each contact with the public as an opportunity to promote a positive impression of the school district.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Post‑secondary technical/trade school graduate is preferred.
  • Apprentice training, journeymen card, and/or license/certification in a trade is desirable.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
  • Subject to pre‑employment and ongoing random drug tests.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to learn appropriate skills for the position.
  • Ability to be self‑directed and complete tasks independently.
  • Ability to read instructions, measure, and mix housekeeping products.
  • Multi‑school or closely related building maintenance experience is required.
  • Holds or is qualified to obtain a low pressure boiler, a class 1 water treatment, and/or pesticide application licenses.
  • Proficient in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry trades.
  • Ability to interpret and apply blueprint and schematic diagram information.
  • Ability to comply with building codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility guidelines.
  • Ability to comply with MSDS, AHERA, EPA, OSHA, and PERRA regulations.
  • Holds or is qualified to obtain an asbestos hazard evaluation specialist certificate.
  • Knowledge of computerized HVAC control systems.
  • Proficient in boiler operations and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record. A current Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a commercial truck endorsement is required.
Responsibilities CUSTODIAN
  • Monitors normal building conditions during assigned working hours. Recognizes when problems may be developing (e.g., unusual odors, noises, leaks, etc.). Immediately reports suspected malfunctions and/or unsafe conditions.
  • Checks daily to find out if a school activity requires preparation or clean up.
  • Assumes responsibility for learning the proper procedures for all assigned duties. Receives written or verbal instructions and carefully follows all directions.
  • Performs regular inspections to ensure that housekeeping equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Maintains an inventory of essential housekeeping supplies. Anticipates needs and replenishes supplies to avoid interrupting the regular work schedule. Monitors and reports the effectiveness of housekeeping products.
  • Performs all housekeeping activities necessary to maintain safe and sanitary conditions. Enforces rules of good housekeeping. Provides for the regular and orderly removal of trash.
  • Completes assignments in‑progress. Consults with the maintenance supervisor, head custodian, and/or the building principal to resolve scheduling conflicts and to ensure a timely response to staff requests. Avoids disrupting building activities except during emergencies. Keeps current with required reports.
  • Follows approved safety procedures to clean up accidents involving chemicals, solvents, blood, body fluids and/or body tissues. Participates in occupational safety and health in‑service training as directed.
  • Deals with unexpected situations (e.g., ill children, spills, broken glass, etc.).
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, and waxes floors. Vacuums and power cleans carpets. Cleans and sanitizes toilet rooms, locker rooms, and showers. Empties and sanitizes trash containers. Resupplies toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, towels, and soap dispensers. Empties pencil sharpeners, removes cobwebs, cleans windows and mirrors. Washes chalkboards and trays.…
