Description and Main Purpose of Job: The Chief Electrician is responsible for the overall technical coordination, supervision, and follow-up of the Electrical, Electronic, and AV/IT department. The role ensures the safe, efficient, and continuous operation, maintenance, and monitoring of all ship networks, technical spaces, and assigned systems, while supporting the Chief Engineer in the planning, execution, and control of maintenance, technical projects, safety management, and operational readiness of the vessel.

Key Responsibilities Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • 1.
    Department Leadership & Inter-departmental Cooperation
    Support the Chief Engineer in the overall management of the Electrical, Electronic, and AV/IT Department and in the implementation of technical, operational, and maintenance priorities.
    Supervise and monitor the work of the ETO, IT Officer, and electrical ratings, ensuring that tasks are properly assigned, executed, and followed up.
    Promote effective cooperation with the Staff Engineer, Staff Captain, and all officers on electrical, electronic, and AV/IT aspects of machinery and troubleshooting.
    Ensure compliance with work and rest hour requirements for self and assigned personnel.
  • 2.
    Technical Operations & Propulsion
    Ensure the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the vessel’s electrical propulsion systems, including the Power Management System (PMS) and associated control systems.
    Monitor the general condition and operational readiness of all electrical and electronic systems across all ship areas, ensuring the vessel remains safe, compliant, and ready to sail at all times.
    Respond to operational needs, technical issues, and emergencies outside normal working hours as required.
  • 3.
    Maintenance, Projects & Dry-Docking
    Plan, coordinate, and follow up planned and corrective maintenance activities for the Electrical Department through Shipsure, ensuring timely execution, proper closure, and accurate records.
    Manage technical defects and outstanding work items, assess their impact on operations, and ensure proper follow-up with the Chief Engineer.
    Prepare, coordinate, and follow up technical stoppages, dry-dock preparations, major maintenance periods, surveys, and other planned technical activities.
  • 4.
    Safety, Cyber Security & Environmental Compliance
    Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including VMS, MARPOL, SOLAS, STCW, IGF Code, class, flag, and port state requirements.
    Enforce strict cyber security protocols across all operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) networks on board.
    Ensure that all Electrical Department personnel strictly follow safety procedures, Lock-out/Tag-out (LOTO) isolations, permits to work, and emergency arrangements.
    Ensure proper housekeeping, cleanliness, and safe conditions of electrical workshops, switchboard rooms, and technical spaces.
  • 5.
    Administration & Logistics
    Oversee spare parts, consumables, and critical stock levels, ensuring adequate inventory control, timely requisitions, and availability of essential equipment.
    Coordinate technical matters with other departments, shore management, suppliers, contractors, class, and authorities as required.
    Prepare a comprehensive handover at the end of the contract, including technical status, outstanding defects, ongoing maintenance, and critical spares.
    Perform any additional duties as may reasonably be required by the Master or the Chief Engineer.
