We are seeking a dedicated Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join our estates team . In this role, you will focus on maintaining, servicing, and repairing the school's ventilation and dry mechanical systems to ensure a comfortable, healthy, and well-ventilated learning environment for students and staff.
Please note:
This position is focused purely on mechanical services, air handling, and ventilation (dry side). It does not involve plumbing, pipe fitting, or wet heating utilities.
- Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs on the school's Air Handling Units (AHUs), mechanical ventilation systems, extract fans, and classroom fresh-air units.
- Routinely inspect, clean, and replace air filters, drive belts, bearings, and pulleys to maintain peak air quality and system efficiency.
- Check and test ventilation dampers, fire dampers, and safety controls to ensure compliance with school safety standards.
- Service and troubleshoot school-based dry mechanical assets, such as gym and auditorium ventilation systems, science lab extraction hoods, and motor-driven equipment.
- Investigate airflow issues, diagnose mechanical faults using technical manuals, and perform timely repairs to minimize disruption to classes.
- Lubricate moving parts, align belts, and complete vibration or operational checks on fans and ventilation motors.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, safety checks, and asset histories using the school's maintenance system.
- Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations, particularly regarding indoor air quality and fire safety standards.
- Coordinate effectively with the wider estates team and external specialist contractors when major overhauls are required.
Qualifications:
- Relevant mechanical qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC, or Building Services).
- Solid understanding of mechanical ventilation and air handling principles.
- Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance role, ideally within a school, college, or commercial building environment.
- Practical experience working with AHUs, ductwork, fans, and associated mechanical assemblies.
- Good problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Friendly, professional demeanor suitable for working on a busy school campus around children and staff.
- Child Safeguarding:
Must be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, as this role is based in a school.
- Competitive salary and pension scheme.
- Generous holiday allowance (aligned with school estate requirements).
- Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
- Free onsite parking and a supportive team environment.
