Economist – Director

About The Role

Pwc’s Strategy& Public Sector and Economics team is expanding its Economics capability and is looking to strengthen its leadership team. We are looking for an experienced Director with a background in applied economics to lead engagements across central government, infrastructure and defence. The Director will help lead and scale PwC’s Economics business. The work will include thought leadership, client delivery and team leadership.

The role provides strategic direction, commercial leadership and operational oversight to drive profitable growth, high-quality delivery and market differentiation. The role will work closely with Partners, Managing Directors and leaders across Consulting, and unlock market opportunities.

• Leading and growing a team of 30+ economists—onshore and offshore
• Business development – bringing with you and/or developing a network of contacts across the public and private sector
• External communications – lead high profile presentation to clients and other stakeholders
• Lead cost‑benefit analyses, economic appraisals, and risk‑adjusted option modelling for defence and security programmes
• Lead analytical and quantitative modelling, including economic forecasting and statistical assessments
• Serve as a senior advisor to clients, translating complex economic concepts into digestible and compelling narratives
• Provide leadership and oversight across project work streams, ensuring quality assurance
• Develop client accounts and support business development
• Coach junior economists to build future leadership capability

• Significant proven experience working as an economist (in a consultancy or government department) with a focus on economic policy in government, infrastructure and/or defence
• Experience in Green Book 5 Case model is essential, other relevant experience as Magenta book desirable
• Proven senior leadership experience in building and leading an economic team
• Proven experience in delivering complex public sector or defence programmes
• Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with experience of working within a matrix organisation
• Experience leading the development of business cases in line with HMT Green Book principles
• An Economics Degree (or an international equivalent) or have equivalent work experience
• Strong analytical skills for quantitative problem‑solving, paired with high attention to detail
• Critical thinking skills to evaluate information, make informed decisions, and develop innovative solutions
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
• Commercial/sales experience (desirable)
