Overview

An exceptional opportunity has arisen within the Gastrointestinal (GI) Services Division at UCLH for an ambitious, values-driven General Manager to take on a pivotal leadership role within one of the UK’s most complex and high-performing NHS trusts. This is a senior operational leadership post with real scale, responsibility and influence. Reporting to the Deputy Divisional Manager, you will work in close partnership with Clinical Leads, senior nursing colleagues and corporate teams to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality and efficient GI surgical services across inpatient, day case and outpatient settings.

GI Surgery at UCLH sits at the intersection of specialist, tertiary and local care, serving a diverse population and operating within a highly complex clinical and operational environment.

As General Manager, you will hold overall responsibility for operational performance, patient access, workforce and financial management, with accountability for nationally mandated standards including cancer waiting times and RTT. A central part of the role is leading improvement. You will work collaboratively with clinical, nursing and managerial colleagues to review, redesign and optimise patient pathways – improving productivity, experience and outcomes while reducing waiting times.

This includes pathways delivered locally and those spanning wider clinical networks across North Central and North East London, requiring strong system leadership and partnership working.

Responsibilities
  • Hold overall responsibility for operational performance, patient access, workforce and financial management, with accountability for nationally mandated standards including cancer waiting times and RTT.
  • Lead improvement initiatives by reviewing, redesigning and optimising patient pathways to enhance productivity, experience and outcomes while reducing waiting times.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams, support and challenge senior clinicians, and ensure robust governance arrangements across GI Surgery.
  • Foster a culture of openness, accountability and continuous improvement, translating learning from incidents, complaints and performance data into tangible service improvements.
Leadership and Impact

This role requires a leader who can combine strategic thinking with operational grip. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, support and challenge senior clinicians, and ensure robust governance arrangements are in place across GI Surgery. You will be expected to foster a culture of openness, accountability and continuous improvement, ensuring that learning from incidents, complaints and performance data translates into tangible service improvements.
