Join our dynamic and inclusive nursing team and develop specialist skills in the management of advanced Critical Care therapies for critically ill adults.

We are looking for candidates with prior experience in recovery or critical care nursing (experience in cardiac nursing desirable). All applicants must have experience as a registered nurse in an acute surgical setting. Induction and training will be tailored to suit individual needs and will support those with minimal experience of caring for level 2 & 3 patients.

The unit offers a variety of development opportunities to successful candidates, including critical care diploma/degree modules and a range of in-house study days.

Main duties of the job

The post involves working within Critical Care at the Royal Brompton Hospital in the Elizabeth Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit.

  • The post holder will work under the supervision of the ward manager and the multi-disciplinary team to monitor and maintain excellent standards of nursing care and staff development as part of the ward team.
  • To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of student nurses and unqualified staff in Critical Care.
  • To carry out all relevant forms of care with provisions of preceptorship/mentorship.
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any specified area.
About us
  • We are an 18-bed level 2 and 3 cardio-respiratory critical care unit.
  • We are a specialist centre for adult congenital heart disease and lung conditions such as Interstitial Lung Disease and Cystic Fibrosis.

The critical care nurse will work in our state‑of‑the‑art facilities and be able to offer level 2 and 3 nursing to patients post‑surgery. Some patients may require support with the following devices:

  • Non‑invasive and invasive ventilation
  • Hemofiltration
  • Advanced pain relief techniques
Job responsibilities Patient/customer care (both direct & indirect)
  • Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard.
  • Under supervision participate in conducting nursing audit to achieve the agreed standards.
  • Under the supervision of the Sister/Charge Nurse contribute to and participate in the process of setting goals and benchmarking standards of care.
  • In conjunction with the staff team contribute to developing and maintaining a ward/department ethos and provide a standard approach to the delivery of excellent nursing care.
  • Demonstrate through a holistic approach to nursing care and day to day clinical issues an understanding of evidence based practice.
  • To demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
  • To be aware of the Trusts framework of clinical governance within the ward or department area, seeking advice or guidance where necessary.
  • Identify and report clinical risks to the ward/departmental manager/modern matron so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
  • To provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual well‑being of staff, patients/clients and their relatives/carers, seeking guidance or advice where necessary.
  • Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.
  • To take charge, whilst being supervised, of the clinical needs of a group of defined patients and/or ward or department on occasion prioritising workload according to changing clinical need for a shift.
  • Collaborating with other members of the ward team to ensure the patients needs are met to a consistently high standard.
  • To delegate tasks and activities to a range of team members in relation to patient care (for example when taking supervised charge or as a link nurse).
