The Senior staff nurse on Smithers ward is based within the Surrey site. Smithers ward is a 16‑bed acute inpatient oncology ward, with a 4‑bed surgical day unit and a 3‑bed inpatient radiation treatment suite attached. The role involves caring for patients undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and complex symptom control, providing holistic care with a focus on the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis.
Mainduties of the job
- Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with multidisciplinary team members to deliver high‑quality, evidence‑led care to patients.
- Exercise clinical judgment and decision‑making about patient needs in terms of long‑term goals or plans.
- Participate fully in the day‑to‑day organization and running of clinical trials, including recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a trial and liaison with trial sponsors as required.
- Perform counter‑checking of patients’ vital signs, blood results, body surface area, chemotherapy prescriptions and consent prior to treatment administration.
- Educate patients on their treatment indications and side effects.
- Ensure necessary medication and follow‑up appointments are obtained.
- Plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge or transfer, discussing progress with the patient, their family and multidisciplinary teams, and alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes.
- Set nursing goal(s) for identified nursing issues, encouraging and teaching other nursing staff to do the same, and assist patients in achieving set goals through care planning.
- NMC Registration.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment.
- Qualification in oncology or a speciality diploma or degree level study (or equivalent), recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience in intravenous drug administration.
- Sufficient post‑registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills.
- Experience in chemotherapy administration.
- Experience in clinical management.
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management.
- Experience in oncology or area of speciality.
- Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills.
- Computer literacy (e.g., use of Microsoft Word and Outlook).
All patient‑facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
