Senior Staff Nurse - Children's Emergency Department

Band 6 – Permanent Part Time 15 hours per week.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, London. Salary: £39,959 – £48,117 per annum pro‑rata (HCAS). The hire date is part of the yearly salary. Closing date: 28/06/2026 23:59.

Job overview

Registered children's nurse with paediatric emergency department experience is required. The post holder will provide expert, high‑quality nursing care, lead the emergency team, and supervise junior staff.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work in the Paediatric Emergency Department, often covering long days and nights, and will:

  • Provide timely, nurse‑led interventions for child and family focused care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care from admission to discharge.
  • Supervise juniors and other staff in the assessment and delivery of care.
  • Take charge of the department when acting as paediatric nurse in charge.
  • Coordinate admission, transfer and discharge processes involving multidisciplinary teams.
  • Act as a resource for adult‑trained nurses caring for children.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit and evidence‑based practice.
  • Maintain nursing hand‑over reports and communicate effectively with patients, relatives and staff.
  • Ensure medicines storage and administration comply with statutory and Trust regulations.
  • Document all care in line with NMC standards and Trust policy.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Provision of expert nursing care and support for children, young people and their relatives/carers.
  • Appropriate delegation of duties to other members of staff.
  • To provide timely nurse‑led interventions for the benefit of the child/ young person’s care.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care of patients from admission to discharge and supervise juniors.
  • To be part of the effective admission/transfer/discharge of a patient involving the family, carers, significant other, multidisciplinary team and community teams.
  • To maintain effective communication channels with patients, relatives and all staff.
  • To provide and receive nursing handover reports as a team member / coordinator.
  • To act as paediatric nurse in charge, coordinating care delivery to children and young people.
  • To be part of the process in implementing clinical governance and evidence‑based practice (e.g., audit).
  • To ensure written documentation is maintained to NMC standards and Trust policy.
  • To ensure the storage and administration of medicines follows statutory and Trust regulations.
  • To act as a resource for adult‑trained nurses in the care of children.
Person specification Educational & Training
  • Registered Nurse – Child branch / RSCN.
  • Diploma or Degree.
Experience / Education
  • Significant experience working in an emergency department environment.
  • Experience in audits.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Triage.
  • Plaster of Paris.
  • Venepuncture and Cannulation.
  • EPLS/APLS.
  • ED/HDU course.
  • Practice Assessor.
