Job Overview
The successful candidate will support the DN Team Leader with leadership initiatives including caseload and staff management within the District Nurse Service structure. The role involves supporting new initiatives, post‑Covid business as usual, and completing home visits to provide nursing care, complex patient management and support.
The post holder will manage a clinical caseload that meets the needs of all patients in the local landscape and network, develop clinical skills and exercise leadership styles. Weekend work on a rotational basis is required to support and coordinate weekend services across the locality.
Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a car or other suitable vehicle for business purposes.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Band 6 Deputy District Nurse you will:
- Use clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep patients safe.
- Safeguard patients, recognise abuse risks and raise concerns appropriately.
- Advocate for patients and be transparent about practice.
- Supervise the work of others and reflect on practice to improve safety, quality, and culture.
- Maintain accurate, legible, comprehensive records and comply with mandatory training.
- Work autonomously while overseeing less experienced staff.
- Provide evidence‑based nursing care and engage in care planning, risk assessment and medication management.
- Communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team and support team development.
Support duties include working with the CNWL Trust values, encouraging partnership with neighbouring hospitals, local authorities, and other providers, and aligning with the Trust Vision and priorities.
Person Specification – Qualification- Currently registered NMC Adult Nurse.
- Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development.
- Numeracy skills required for safe medicine administration.
- Previous experience as a Band 5/6 community nurse or equivalent level.
- HR skills training (recruitment, managing absence).
- Care planning: assessing, implementing, evaluating care plans.
- Knowledge of safeguarding/advocacy, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and Mental Health Act.
- Manual handling of patients, obtaining consent, medicines management, infection control and aseptic technique.
– Desirable Experience
- Supervision, line management and appraisal training.
- Mentorship qualification.
- Valid UK driving licence and access to vehicle.
- Understand and implement the Equal Opportunities Policy at a level appropriate to the role.
Skills and Abilities
- Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams, presentation and handover skills.
- Maintain accurate, timely, concise clinical records (electronic and handwritten) in line with CNWL policies.
- Proficiency in clinical skills specific to the service: catheterisation, wound care, palliative and end‑of‑life care, IV administration, injections, Doppler assessments, compression bandaging, diabetes management, venepuncture.
- Coordinate work allocation and shifts where appropriate.
- Ability to discuss sensitive issues supportively and challenge assertively when needed.
- Collaborative, communicative, kind, considerate, reliable and enthusiastic.
- Team leadership: manage others, contribute to team culture, promote inclusivity, and support colleagues to achieve objectives.
