Oncology Nurse, RN Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen to employ a dynamic forward‑thinking individual as a Band 5 staff nurse on Horder Ward. Horder Ward is a 12‑bedded acute oncology ward caring for patients undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, as well as palliative patients with complex symptom control and psychological needs.
We are looking for a caring, compassionate and competent nurse who has a special interest in palliative care. The ideal candidate is someone who works well under pressure, possesses excellent time‑management skills, and is dedicated to delivering high‑quality patient care.

Main duties of the job- Plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient manner, in conjunction with the shift coordinator.
- Develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the various treatment modalities administered within the unit.
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with guidance from the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Be aware of the side effects of treatments in progress and adopt a problem‑solving approach to minimise potential adverse reactions.
- Be involved in the direct delivery of skilled specialised nursing care with supervision until competent (e.g., wound dressings, removal of drains, insertion of urinary catheters).
- Understand protocols for patients undergoing clinical trials.
- Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health‑care professionals to ensure they are observed.
- Be rostered as part of the ward to care for patients over a 24‑hour period.
- Use personal protective equipment as required when exposed to body fluids, odours and infections, in line with Trust policies for Health and Safety and Infection Control.
- Assist with the collection of samples for diagnostic testing (e.g., urine and sputum collection).
- Registered nurse (registration required).
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Qualification in oncology or a specialist diploma or degree level study (or equivalent) and a recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience in intravenous drug administration.
- Sufficient post‑registration nursing experience in oncology or a speciality to be confident and competent in the required skills.
- Experience in chemotherapy administration.
- Experience in clinical management.
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management.
- Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills.
- Effective negotiating and influencing skills.
- Leadership skills and ability to motivate others.
Applicants must have appropriate UK professional registration.
