Job overview

An experienced Band 7 Infant Feeding Clinical Advisor will lead the delivery of a new Maternity Neonatal Triage service at West Middlesex Hospital. The role will provide expert telephone and face‑to‑face clinical triage for babies under 28 days presenting with feeding concerns, jaundice, weight loss, vomiting and other neonatal issues, ensuring that babies and their families receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Working autonomously within an innovative nurse/midwife‑led service, you will deliver advanced clinical assessment, specialist infant feeding support and clinical decision‑making, promote breastfeeding and safe formula feeding, support positive parent‑infant relationships and facilitate effective discharge planning and onward referral to community services.

Main duties of the job
  • Act as the clinical lead for the Maternity Neonatal Triage service, providing expert assessment and management of babies under 28 days with infant feeding and neonatal concerns.
  • Conduct comprehensive telephone and face‑to‑face assessments, formulate evidence‑based management plans and ensure timely escalation of babies requiring medical review.
  • Provide expert infant feeding advice, promote best practice and provide specialist support to families and healthcare professionals.
  • Lead staff education, audit, quality improvement, governance and service development activities, contributing to pathway redesign, data collection, evaluation of outcomes and the Trust’s Baby Friendly Initiative standards.
  • Represent the service to wider organisational partners to improve neonatal care across organisational boundaries.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or Midwife with relevant postgraduate experience in infant feeding or neonatal care.
  • Demonstrated experience in infant feeding roles and teaching or supervising staff.
  • Evidence of continued professional development, including recognised training in breastfeeding support (e.g., UNICEF BFI courses).
  • Required UK professional registration.
Experience
  • Post‑registration experience in midwifery, neonatal care or health visiting.
  • Experience acting as a specialist in infant feeding and supporting families in the community.
  • Experience in mentoring, teaching and facilitating professional learning.
  • Experience in audit, risk management and quality improvement projects.
Skills and knowledge
  • Advanced clinical assessment and infant feeding skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to evidence‑based practice, service development and continuous improvement.
  • Enthusiasm, integrity and a positive role‑model approach for staff and families.

Employment terms

Fixed‑term contract for 9 months (funding until March 2027 expected to be extended). Full or part‑time positions available (37.5 hours per week). Salary £55,524 – £62,652 per annum incl. HCAS (pro rata). Employment is subject to a six‑month probation. Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.
