Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, innovative paediatric nurse to become a band 6 Staff Nurse in the dedicated paediatric unit at the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC), adjacent to the main branch of Moorfields Eye Hospital in City Road.
Experience working as a band 6 paediatric/child branch nurse and a post‑registration ophthalmic qualification is essential.
The role involves close collaboration with the paediatric multi‑professional team to provide compassionate, high‑quality care for children, young people and their families, and to support the Safeguarding Children agenda within the Trust.
ResponsibilitiesAs a senior nurse, you will:
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care programmes within the RDCEC.
- Participate in safeguarding children and young people, communicating concerns to the safeguarding team and colleagues.
- Work collaboratively with the permanent nursing and play teams to involve families in care and apply child‑development knowledge to support families throughout the paediatric hospital journey.
- Deliver high standards of patient care using clearly defined care pathways.
- Undertake required training for Safeguarding Children and Young People.
- Participate in pre‑admission assessment of children and families.
- Use clear communication to promote family‑centred care.
- Liaise with multidisciplinary team members to implement distraction therapies.
- Handle parent/guardian enquiries courteously and report details to Paediatric Sister.
- Contribute positively to ward or clinic change initiatives aimed at improving family‑centred care or service delivery.
- Participate in ward or departmental quality assurance activities and monitor standards of care.
Essential:
- Registered Paediatric/Child Branch Nurse.
- Ophthalmic qualification.
- Current NMC registration.
- Minimum 4 years post‑qualifying paediatric nursing experience, including paediatric ophthalmic nursing experience.
- Ability to prioritise own workload and that of others.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children and young people.
- Evidence of well‑developed clinical practice and ophthalmic nursing knowledge.
Desirable:
- PILS compliance or willingness to undertake training.
- Ability to delegate duties.
- Ability to use IT resources effectively.
