Lead Recovery/HDU Nurse

Location: North London

Salary: Up to £45,000 per annum

Contract: Full-Time, Permanent

About the Role

As the Lead Recovery/HDU Nurse, you will provide clinical leadership across the Recovery and HDU areas, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient‑centred care. Working closely with senior nursing and theatre leadership teams, you will support the day‑to‑day management of the department, promote best practice, and help maintain the highest standards of clinical care. The successful candidate will be a visible and supportive leader, committed to developing staff, driving quality improvements, and ensuring an outstanding patient experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and support to Recovery and HDU teams.
  • Coordinate and oversee the daily running of the department.
  • Ensure high standards of patient care, safety, and clinical practice are consistently maintained.
  • Support the management of staffing, resources, and patient flow.
  • Act as a clinical role model and expert practitioner.
  • Lead on quality improvement initiatives, audits, and clinical governance activities.
  • Support, mentor, and develop junior nurses and support staff.
  • Deliver teaching and training within the department.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, anaesthetists, theatre teams, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist with the implementation of evidence‑based practice and service development projects.
  • Participate in the on‑call rota where required.
About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse.
  • Significant experience working in a Recovery, HDU, ITU, Critical Care, or Theatre environment.
  • Proven leadership or senior nursing experience.
  • Sound knowledge of post‑anaesthetic care and the management of deteriorating patients.
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision‑making skills.
  • Experience mentoring, supervising, and developing staff.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • A proactive approach to problem‑solving and continuous improvement.
  • A commitment to delivering outstanding patient care.
