King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a leading teaching Trust in South East London providing a full range of local hospital and specialist services, including Neuro‑Oncology care at Denmark Hill.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist in Neuro‑Oncology at Denmark Hill Site. This role is part of a multi‑disciplinary Neurosurgical Team delivering high‑quality care for children, young people and families affected by benign and malignant brain tumours. The position involves clinical practice, management, education, research, audit and professional activities aligned with national guidelines and the Trust’s governance framework.

Clinical Practice

• Assess health, nursing and related needs of patients, families and carers.
• Make and receive referrals; admit and discharge patients according to protocols.
• Assist in running clinics and see patients.
• Assist in the running of multidisciplinary meetings.
• Administer chemotherapy protocols.
• Ensure all patients have a complete, accurate plan of care reflecting assessment and recommendations.
• Support and empower patients, families and carers to engage in decisions concerning their care by providing information on specialist nursing services.

Care Management

• Maintain awareness of NHS and Cancer Plan targets.
• Provide care aligned with agreed protocols, including MDT referral mechanisms.
• Guide team members to deliver a customer‑focused service that meets NICE Cancer Guidelines.
• Attend and coordinate MDT meetings.
• Cross‑cover other cancer services when peers are on leave.
• Deliver a seven‑day service for children with cancer treatments in exceptional circumstances.

Clinical Practice Leadership

• Act as a positive role model supporting senior nursing team in implementing Trust initiatives.
• Develop effective working relationships based on trust and open cooperation.
• Contribute to nursing practice development within the team.
• Represent the service at Care Group, Trust or national levels, collaborating with other clinical nurse specialists to evaluate and promote the specialist nursing role.

Training, Education and Practice Development

• Act as a clinical expert and advise on educational opportunities to support others’ specialist knowledge and skills.
• Create an environment for practice development that is evaluated and disseminated.
• Lead and develop programmes of education and practice improvements across the Trust, nationally and internationally.
• Identify specialist learning activities that support clinical teaching and assessment in multidisciplinary settings.
• Provide effective learning experiences for students via preceptorship, mentorship, counselling, clinical supervision and an educational environment.
• Work with academic colleagues to improve practice through service and practice developments.

Research, Evidence‑Based Practice and Audit

• Promote and facilitate research, evidence‑based practice and clinical audit within the Trust.
• Contribute to clinical audit, including service‑user feedback, patient experience surveys and action plans.
• Support nursing research initiatives and collaborate with agencies.
• Apply and disseminate research findings related to specialist nursing practice.
• Participate in Trust‑approved research projects conducted within the department.
• Protect patient rights during audit and research studies.
• Contribute to, and participate in, Service Reviews with Macmillan Cancer Support; provide an annual report of activity and service development.
• Collate and record agreed activity data to measure service effectiveness and impact.

• NMC Part 1 (Child)
• Clinical expertise through formal qualification (Degree / Masters) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to Neuro‑Oncology.
• Recognised teaching/mentoring qualification.

• Relevant experience or professional qualification in the care of children and young people with cancer.
• Ability to impart complex information to patients, parents and carers of varying understanding.
• Proven experience of service development.

• Strong leadership skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Advanced clinical assessment skills, or willingness to develop these.
• Basic counselling skills.

UK professional registration is required.
