As a key member of the team, you will:

• Lead and coordinate daily operations within the Haematology Day Unit
• Deliver expert nursing care, including blood transfusions, apheresis, venesections, and acute sickle cell crisis management

• NMC‑registered Nurse (or Midwife) with at least 2 years' experience in Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia care
• Previous experience at Band 6 level/above within a haematology or relevant specialty

• Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills
• Commitment to continuous professional development, education, and audit
• Mentorship qualification and ideally working towards or holding a BSc or master's degree

The Red Cell Haematology Day Clinic, part of the Emergency Department Bypass pathway, delivers a range of specialist services including blood transfusions, apheresis transfusions, and venesections. Operating from 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and weekends, the unit provides care for patients attending for diagnostic tests, planned therapeutic interventions (such as transfusions, exchange transfusions, and intravenous infusions), psychology appointments, and urgent reviews for acute sickle cell pain episodes, all in accordance with individual outpatient and pain protocols.

The post holder will have a minimum of two years' experience within a Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia setting and will support the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in coordinating comprehensive care across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and the Haematology Day Centre.

As an experienced nurse, the post holder will coordinate daily activities within the department, ensuring effective communication and consistent support for nursing staff. They will play a pivotal role in assessing patient care needs and in the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care plans.

This position also requires the post holder to provide clinical leadership and expertise, supporting and mentoring junior colleagues while actively contributing to the education and training of the wider multidisciplinary team.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide expert, person‑centred nursing care to patients with sickle cell disorder, thalassaemia, and other rare inherited anaemias in accordance with local protocols and national guidelines.

Act as a clinical lead during shifts within the Haematology Day Unit, coordinating patient care and staff allocation to ensure safe, efficient service delivery.

Perform and oversee clinical procedures such as venepuncture, cannulation, blood transfusions, apheresis transfusions, venesections, and intravenous therapies safely and competently.

Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, develop and implement individualised care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team.

Support timely recognition and escalation of clinical deterioration in patients, ensuring appropriate referrals and interventions are initiated.

Facilitate and support drop‑in reviews for registered sickle cell patients presenting with acute pain, working within outpatient and acute pain management protocols.

Liaise with consultants, Nurse, ACPs, CNSs, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate diagnostic tests, investigations, and onward referrals for specialist care as needed.
