Senior Staff Nurse / Practitioner (Day Surgery)

Extensive experience in peri‑operative care is required for this Band 6 position in the Day Surgery Unit (DSU) at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role offers a variety of surgical specialties including general surgery, orthopaedics, bariatrics, upper GI, colorectal, gynaecology, urology, oncology, paediatrics, ENT, maxillofacial, vascular, plastic and breast surgery, and robotic procedures.
Responsibilities- Support patients throughout their surgical journey, including pre‑operative assessment, education, and preparing them for procedures.
- Ensure all clinical and administrative documentation is complete and that required investigations are available.
- Coordinate effective patient flow, liaising with the multidisciplinary team and escalating risks or concerns promptly to maintain patient safety.
- Plan, implement and evaluate individualized, patient‑centred care, promoting evidence‑based practice and maintaining high clinical standards.
- Take charge of the department in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse, providing leadership, supervision and support to junior and unregistered staff.
- Ensure safe, efficient admissions and overall safe, compassionate care for all patients.
- NMC‑registered Nurse (Level 1, 2, or 12) or HCPC‑registered Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).
- Registered ODP with Dip HE, NVQ3, or C&G 752.
- Teaching & Assessment Level 3, ENB 998/C&G 7307, Cert. ed. or equivalent qualification.
- Recognised post‑registration course in Day Surgery, Anaesthesia, Theatre, Recovery or an equivalent accredited course, or relevant clinical experience within a theatre or day‑surgery/peri‑operative environment.
- Experience as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) or ODP, previously at Band 5.
- Previous experience within this speciality.
- Effectively communicates verbally, in writing, and in electronic formats.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development, maintaining an updated portfolio in line with Key Skill Frameworks.
- Awareness of the role of facilitator/preceptor and ability to educate others.
- Reflective practice and continuous improvement.
- Understanding of Clinical Governance principles, including risk management, audit and quality improvement.
- Articulates a clear motivation for working in these clinical areas.
- Takes charge of the ward when senior staff are absent.
This post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions), including a Criminal Records check.
Salary: £47,951 to £56,863 a year, inclusive of HCAS
