Job Responsibilities
- The matron for professional practice will provide professional, clinical, and operational leadership to ensure high standards of midwifery and nursing practice, education, and staff development within a large tertiary maternity and neonatal service. Acting as an expert practitioner and visible role model, the post holder will promote a positive learning culture, professional accountability, and continuous improvement in care delivery.
- The role includes line management and leadership of the professional development midwives, fetal well‑being midwives, and clinical placement support midwives. The Matron will also maintain a professional link with the Neonatal Educators to support collaborative working and alignment of maternity and neonatal education where appropriate.
- The matron will ensure that clinical practice, education provision, and student support processes are safe, evidence‑based, and aligned with the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council and national priorities set by NHS England.
- The post holder will maintain robust oversight of statutory and mandatory training compliance across maternity services.
- The post holder will work collaboratively with the senior midwifery and nursing leadership team and multidisciplinary colleagues, including obstetric, neonatal, and anaesthetic education leads, to ensure accurate and auditable training records, providing clear governance assurance.
- Registered Midwife
- First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Post‑graduate qualification and / or equivalent level of knowledge gained through extensive experience
- Leadership qualifications and or experience
- Has obtained a Master’s qualification.
- Post Graduate Certificate of Education or equivalent.
- Practised advanced midwifery skills in all aspects of clinical midwifery
- Experience of NLS training
- Lead on formulation, dissemination and implementation of policies and guidelines
- Service development experience, delivering clinical quality improvements and successful service change
- Formal teaching practice in HIEs
- Up to date and evidence based knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
- Plan, teach/ deliver core training to multidisciplinary team
- Good level of skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience in writing for publication
