Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Research Assistant, Huth Initiative for a New Political Economy (HINPE)
Location: Greater London

LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university.

Salary from £36,513 to £41,565 per annum inclusive with potential to progress to £44,468 per annum inclusive of London allowance.

This is a fixed-term appointment for 12 months initially, with possibility of extension (subject to funding).

The start date is flexible but will be no later than 1st September 2026.

We are seeking a motivated, independent, and highly skilled Pre-Doctoral Research Assistant to work under the direction of Dr Daniel Chandler on the Huth Initiative for a New Political Economy (HINPE). HINPE is a major new research programme at LSE that brings together leading academics to develop the ideas, policies and institutions for a fairer and more sustainable economic system. The Initiative includes both a core research programme and a Policy Hub focused on translating ideas into practice, and is designed to grow over time into a permanent Institute for a New Political Economy.

The main purpose of the role will be to support Dr Chandler’s research programme in the fields of economics, public policy and political philosophy, with a focus on two broad areas:

  • predistribution and good jobs;
  • community and cohesion.
  • The role will involve undertaking tasks including conducting literature reviews; identifying, managing and analysing data sets; overseeing projects and helping to organise research-related events and convenings. It is also expected that the successful candidate will become an active participant in the research programme.

    The successful candidate should have a completed Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and/or a completed (or nearly completed) Master's degree in economics, political science, or other closely related discipline. Given that the research spans both political philosophy and economics, candidates with training across both disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply; as are those with an interest in connecting academic research to wider public debates and public policy.

    Candidates must have strong empirical research skills, including proficiency in statistical programming (particularly Stata), a solid understanding of econometric techniques, and demonstrated experience working on data-related research projects. The ideal candidate would also have excellent writing and communication skills, an ability to organise and synthesise complex information, and an interest in public policy.

    When applying, please keep covering letters to a maximum of 1-2 pages.

    We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities.
