We are looking for an Associate Editor with research experience in relevant scientific areas in biology to join Communications Biology – a multidisciplinary open access biology journal. The role is a temporary position that allows you to try an editorial role before fully committing to this career choice.

We are mainly looking for a background in Metabolism, Genetics or Immunology but will consider other biological research backgrounds.

Fixed‑term contract position based in London or Pune with a hybrid working pattern.

• Handle original research papers and work closely with other editors on manuscript selection and peer review.
• Make well‑reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts based on expert advice.
• Engage with an external editorial board – guide and assist external editors with the above tasks, and recruit and train new board members.
• Liaise extensively with editors at other Springer Nature journals and with experts in the international scientific community.
• Attend conferences and visit research institutions.
• Commission various content including Reviews, Perspectives and Comment articles.
• Contribute to defining journal strategy and editorial policies.

• A PhD or equivalent in a relevant biology discipline; a background in Metabolism, Genetics or Immunology preferred.
• A genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
• The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research from diverse areas of the biological sciences.
• A desire to interact with scientists worldwide and help them understand our publishing criteria.

• Postdoctoral experience (advantageous but not essential).
• Editorial experience (full training provided; substantial experience may lead to consideration for Senior Editor).

• A CV (brief account of your research and relevant experience).
• A cover letter explaining your interest in the post.
• A summary in the "Research Highlight" format of a recent paper published in Communications Biology (example available).
