Research Assistant, Research Fellow in Responsible Modelling
UCL STEaPP is one of the newest departments in the Faculty, focused on the interconnections between science, technology, engineering and public policy. STEaPP is and inherently interdisciplinary department, with a mandate to develop relationships with diverse external policy, industry and civil society stakeholders, both in the UK and internationally.
About the roleThis is a fixed-term maternity cover funded until July 2027 to join Dr Erica Thompson’s research group within STEaPP, an interdisciplinary and policy-focused department. The purpose of this job is to conduct interdisciplinary research on Responsible Modelling, to organise and assist with hosting a three‑day training event on Responsible Modelling for early career researchers in spring 2027, and to organise and assist with hosting a one‑day meeting on Responsible Modelling in Policy aimed at public sector participants (date TBC).The
successful candidate will be appointed as Research Assistant Grade 6B or Research Fellow Grade 7 with the higher‑grade dependent on having been awarded a PhD. Pay per annum including London Allowance is:
Grade 6B is £39,148 to £41,833, Grade 7 is £41,833 to £52,586
Applicants should have expertise and research interests applicable to the use of mathematical models for decision‑making in any context, with an interest in Responsible Modelling (which broadly refers to social and ethical aspects that become important when models are used to inform decisions, such as the social values embedded within modelling choices). Strong general organisation and coordination skills will be required.
Prior experience of event organisation, teaching/facilitation and policy environments would be advantageous but are not necessary. A doctorate in a relevant field is required for appointment at Grade 7.
