General Description:
City, University of London, in collaboration with St George’s, offers PhD and MPhil opportunities within the field of Applied Vision. The Centre for Applied Vision Research supports interdisciplinary research in Optics, Visual Science, and Optometry, with projects addressing clinically relevant and real-world challenges. Research topics include paediatric eye care, glaucoma management, age-related macular degeneration, myopia pathogenesis and interventions, colour vision screening, machine learning for early-stage vision deficits, COVID-19 impacts on visually impaired individuals, binocular interactions, motion perception, and factors influencing Ortho-K lenses for myopia control.

Students will conduct rigorous research combining experimental, clinical, and computational approaches, contributing to academic publications and practical applications for practitioners, patient groups, and clinical stakeholders.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should hold a relevant undergraduate or master’s degree in optometry, visual science, psychology, neuroscience, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated research aptitude and academic excellence are required.
  • International applicants are welcome and should meet the University’s English language requirements.

Required Expertise/Skills:

  • Strong foundation in visual science, optometry, or related fields.
  • Competence in research design, data collection, and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Effective communication skills and a commitment to research impacting clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Salary Details:
PhD studentships are fully funded, covering tuition fees and providing a stipend according to UKRI and University guidelines. Specific stipend amounts and additional funding support depend on individual project arrangements.
