Based in London, you will play a leading role in the research and development of next-generation network architectures, with a particular focus on network and service orchestration across Open and Quantum-Safe Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (TN/NTN).

This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic stakeholder engagement. You will work alongside leading researchers, engineers, industry partners, and academic collaborators, translating complex technical concepts into practical solutions and impactful research outcomes.

WHAT YOU'LL DO (Duties)
  • Work closely with senior and highly skilled team members on open future network architectures across the AESTRAM project. Contribute expertise to shape the research directions around future network technologies, focusing on multi-domain service orchestration in 6G, including AI services, and TN/NTN.
  • Actively participate in architecture, functions, and interfaces design within the AESTRAM research project. Conceive, develop, evaluate and defend novel original research ideas around the topics of future open, AI-powered and quantum-safe networking. Consolidate the ideas in the form of publications, simulations, IPRs, and demonstrations.
  • Benchmark & optimise the performance of the E2E Open RAN systems in a cabled and OTA environment across the AESTRAM project using specialised Test & Measurement tools (Test UEs, UE Simulator, Traffic simulator, RF spectrum analyser etc).
  • Using Digital Catapult's advanced future networking/5G testbed facilities to direct and assist in development of the required software and associated demonstration network.
  • Prepare and carry out oral presentations and written reports across the AESTRAM project in technical and progress meetings. Ensure quality deliverables, transfer competences and research results to stakeholders.
Requirements
  • A MSc Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience in an industrial research environment. A PhD in a relevant area would be advantageous.
  • In-depth domain knowledge and research experience in two or more of the following areas: TN/NTN, network and service orchestration, telecom AI, Open-RAN & Quantum Safe Networks.
  • Analytical approach on Network optimisation with hands‑on experience on optimisation models and tools would be a benefit.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and documentation skills to produce technical design documents and reports.
  • Experience of using specialised Test & Measurement tools (UE Simulator, Test UE, Data Traffic simulator, Protocol analyser etc.) along with packet capture tools (e.g. tcpdump, wireshark etc.) to execute test suites and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of 3

    GPP, O‑RAN & ETSI standards.
  • Fast learner, highly adaptable, collaborative and capable of working in a fast‑paced research environment. Committed and willing to go above and beyond to meet dynamic project requirements.
  • Previous participation in collaborative research projects and practical experience with commercial or testbed network equipment would be advantageous.

Final date to receive applications: 25th August 2026

The full time equivalent salary for this role is c. £60,000 - 65,000 subject to experience. We are seeking someone to work part‑time, 4 days per week, and the salary payable will be paid on a pro rata basis.
