Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial invites applications by highly talented researchers for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in General Framework for Nonequilibrium Processes:
From Theory to Applications as part of the ERC Frontier Research Advanced Grant “Machine-Aided General Framework for Fluctuating Dynamic Density Functional Theory (MAGFFDDFT)”. You will lead the overarching phase of this cutting-edge project, that transitions its computational-theoretical developments into targeted practical applications.
What you would be doing
The overarching objective of the MAGFFDDFT project is to develop a machine-learning-aided framework that establishes low-dimensional laws governing the dynamics of observables. You will apply this framework to analyse classical fluids, and complex multiscale systems in general, far from equilibrium.
Specifically, you will lead the project's third core theme: applying our newly developed theory and machine learning (ML) methodologies to challenging, targeted applications.
Your key responsibilities:
Develop and implement models:
Balance theory and computation, with a gradual shift toward numerical solutions, ML, and full application deployment.
Share research findings:
Publish results in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences.
Collaborate and support:
Work closely with the Principal Investigator and provide mentorship and support to other researchers within the Group.
What we are looking forYou should have (or about to receive) a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or other related field, and a strong foundation and proven record in general mathematical modelling, mathematical techniques (analytical – numerical), scientific computing and numerical methods.
Experience or good knowledge with some or all of the following areas is highly desirable: computational and applied mathematics, especially numerical and applied analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs)/stochastic PDEs and stochastic processes, and physics, especially fluid dynamics and statistical physics.
Given the technical complexity of the research, you should have strong problem-solving skills.
You must be adaptable and initiative-taking in a dynamic, fast-paced research environment.
What we can offer youThe post offers a unique opportunity to be part of a world-class research environment at Imperial College (IC). You will join a highly interdisciplinary team working on a wide variety of exciting projects at the interface between applied mathematics and engineering science fundamentals.
You will benefit through direct involvement in cutting-edge engineering project will offer an excellent training opportunity in its theoretical and computational areas. Indeed, training will take place within a highly interdisciplinary context bridging multiple disciplines.
The nature of training, acquired skills and broad background gained during the tenure of the project will place you in a unique position for either an academic or private sector future.
You will take on an outward-facing role, by e.g. taking the lead in establishing collaborations, representing the team in meetings with academic and other partners, and getting involved in the organisation ofschools and short instructional courses; you will also take the lead in establishing collaborations with national and overseas groups.
The package of research will be closely allied with career development: IC offers extensive, sector-leading research staff development and support, including the Early Career Researcher Institute which runs a number of dedicated courses; IC also offers opportunities for promotion and progression.
The opportunity to advance your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
You will have 10 development days to develop your skills and explore your career prospects as you see fit.
Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days off a year and generous pension schemes).Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to…
