Specialist Advisor Environmental Reporting

The role
We are looking for someone passionate about making a difference. In this role, you will lead the delivery of national and international reports that drive the sustainable management of Wales' natural resources.

You will work across diverse environmental topics nature conservation, water, industry, and waste ensuring our reporting is accurate, timely, and impactful. From managing complex projects and analysing data to collaborating with government and partners, you'll play a key role in shaping how Wales monitors and reports on the state of its environment.

As a specialist lead, you will influence decisions, mentor colleagues, and develop innovative approaches to improve reporting efficiency. You'll oversee budgets, guide governance groups, and provide expert advice across Natural Resources Wales.

You will have experience designing, developing and implementing reporting and analytical tools from scratch, ideally using Power BI, FME and R and be confident in turning complex environment datasets into meaningful insights and descision-support products.

We are looking for candidates with knowledge of the Water Framework Directive and wider environmental reporting and regulatory requirements, who can apply this understanding to deliver robust environmental evidence, performance reporting and statutory outputs.

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

About us
Natural Resources Wales is delivering a vital programme of environmental reporting that meets national and international obligations and drives sustainable management of our natural resources. This work informs policy and action across key themes nature conservation, water, industry, and waste.

As part of our Environmental Reporting Team, you'll lead projects, manage data and evidence, and collaborate with technical specialists, government bodies, and partners across Wales and the UK. You'll help develop innovative approaches to improve how we report on the state of the environment making our work timely, accurate, and impactful.
What you will do     Analyse, manipulate, interpret and report complex environmental data from a range of sources to deliver NRW's statutory and agreed non-statutory national and international reporting obligations, ensuring they contribute to corporate objectives and the sustainable management of natural resources.
Lead and project manage complex reporting tasks, working across the business and across a broad range of environmental themes including nature conservation, water, industry and waste.
Act as a specialist lead for reporting, providing expert advice and guidance to staff across the business.
Lead on the development of new and innovative approaches to drive forward efficiency and improvements to the reporting service.
Interact with and influence a range of government, agency and partner bodies working on complex and strategic environmental reporting projects at Wales and UK levels.
Participate in, and chair as appropriate, groups established to ensure the effective governance of environmental reporting within NRW.

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method. You will be a professional specialist educated to degree level in a technical or environmental discipline, or able to prove relevant experience.
Substantial experience in the fields of data management, analysis and manipulation using appropriate software, including ArcGIS, Excel, R, and FME.
Experience in managing technical projects.

Experience of working at the national level on projects and work programmes relating to environmental management and reporting.
Good inter-personal skills and be confident a communicator with the ability to communicate complex data and statistics effectively using a range of techniques including tables, graphs and maps.
