Do you enjoy investigating complex issues, collaborating with stakeholders, and helping strengthen trust in the scholarly record?

Location: UK

About our Team

Our STMJ (Science, Technology, and Medical Journals) team publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed research that drives progress across scientific and medical disciplines. We collaborate closely with authors, editors, reviewers, and societies to ensure the integrity and impact of published work. Through innovation in editorial workflows and publishing technology, we help global research communities discover, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge that advances science and improves lives.

About the Role

As a Senior Research Integrity Screener, you will play a critical role in supporting research integrity and publishing ethics across Elsevier’s journal portfolio. Working closely with editors, publishers, authors, and internal stakeholders, you will assess manuscripts for potential research integrity concerns, support publishing ethics case management, and contribute to the continuous improvement of screening processes, policies, and technologies. In addition to managing complex screening activities, you will act as a trusted subject matter expert within the team, coaching and mentoring colleagues, sharing best practices, and helping to strengthen the team’s overall capability.

You will play a leading role in identifying emerging risks, recommending process improvements, and supporting initiatives that enhance the effectiveness and impact of Elsevier’s research integrity and publishing ethics operations.

This role is ideal for someone with experience in research integrity, manuscript screening, editorial triage, or scholarly publishing who is looking to combine technical expertise with leadership, mentorship, and continuous improvement responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Review and assess manuscripts flagged through research integrity screening tools and workflows.
  • Evaluate identified concerns and determine appropriate actions in accordance with established policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Distinguish between valid concerns and false positives through careful analysis, investigation, and fact-checking.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to editors, publishers, authors, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Assess, prioritise, assign, and manage publishing ethics cases in line with team procedures and agreed service levels.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on research integrity screening and publishing ethics best practices.
  • Coach, mentor, and support colleagues, helping to develop team knowledge, confidence, and capability.
  • Lead or contribute to initiatives that improve workflows, operational effectiveness, and research integrity outcomes.
  • Identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities within research integrity and publishing ethics, recommending improvements to policies, processes, and detection mechanisms.
Requirements
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex information and make balanced, evidence-based decisions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to investigation, fact-checking, and problem-solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain findings and recommendations clearly to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet agreed service levels.
  • Experience working with policies, procedures, compliance frameworks, quality assurance processes, or editorial assessment workflows.
  • Experience in research integrity, publishing ethics, manuscript screening, editorial triage, or scholarly publishing.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, or positively influence colleagues and contribute to team development.
  • Experience leading initiatives, driving process improvements, or contributing to operational change.
  • Knowledge of peer review, research integrity principles, and publishing ethics best practices.
