Within Defence, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery is the Royal Artillery’s Engagement Unit, providing His Majesty’s Saluting Battery for ceremonial operations in London and across the UK. These events include Royal Salutes, State Visits, His Majesty’s Birthday Parade – ‘Trooping the Colour’ – and performing the Musical Drive.

The roleWe are seeking a dedicated, physically fit Sub Rider Groom with a passion for equine care to join the ceremonial team. You will groom, care for, and manage ceremonial horses while supporting parades and other military ceremonial events, both in central London and nationwide.
Key Responsibilities- Groom and care for ceremonial horses, ensuring their health, cleanliness, and readiness
- Assist in preparation and execution of ceremonial parades and Musical Drive performances
- Maintain stables, equipment, and riding tack to the highest standard
- Support veterinary checks, equine training routines, and exercise programmes
- Uphold military standards, discipline, and safety during all duties
- Minimum of 1 year’s experience in horse grooming, riding, or equine care
- BHS Stage 1 Basic Equine Care certification or equivalent experience
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; comfortable in both civilian and military teams
- Membership of the British Horse Society (preferred but not essential)
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and participate in ceremonial duties
- Salary: £26,334- £32,647 per year
- Pension: Automatic enrolment in the non-contributory Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2015 (opt out available).
- Leave: 30 days’ annual leave plus eight UK bank holidays
