R&D Tax – Technology / Software Consultant

The opportunity

An exciting opportunity to work in EY’s Global Grants Credits & Incentives team based in our central London office, alongside other STEM professionals, as well as tax and accounting colleagues.

As a Consultant you will be working with a variety of clients from owner managed businesses to multinational groups, who are at the front line in developing cutting edge technology which is helping the UK to stay as a market leader by encouraging investment into research and development.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of a diverse team of highly successful industry and tax specialists. You will join and lead interviews with senior technical personnel across a wide range of industries to identify the scientific and technological aspects of client R&D projects that qualify for R&D tax relief. You will actively contribute to report writing, analyse the financial aspects of clients’ R&D projects, and communicate regularly with clients.

As well as working directly with existing clients, you will also be offered the chance to support business development opportunities and cross-sector claims.

Your key responsibilities
  • Working as an effective member of a project team, exhibiting strong communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with other team members of different skill sets
  • Writing compelling technical project reports to bring out the key technical factors of client projects to support R&D tax claims
  • Interacting with clients' senior technical, development and engineering staff in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the projects undertaken and identify how aspects of projects meet the R&D Guidelines
  • Undertaking data analysis and calculation to quantify project expenditure
  • Applying advanced problem-solving skills and critical thinking to project execution and delivery
  • Building and maintaining relationships with clients to provide high levels of client service
  • Responsible for high-quality delivery of advice and solutions to major clients, ensuring management of risk and reputation
  • A keen desire to adapt and flex existing knowledge to different sectors and build on core capabilities
Skills and attributes for success
  • A strong interest in scientific, technological and engineering challenges, particularly those involving software, telecommunications and programming languages
  • Industry or university experience delivering software projects and addressing the limitations of the technologies used
  • Ability to quickly understand new software technologies and concepts, including platforms, application programming interfaces (APIs) and frameworks, discuss them confidently in depth, and apply strong commercial awareness
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage confidently with technical professionals and summarise complex information concisely
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work first time
  • An interest in project and company finances and their tax treatment
To qualify for the role, you must have
  • A degree in computer science, information technology, software development, telecommunications engineering or a related discipline
  • At least one year of computer science or software development experience, gained through graduate study or, ideally, industry
  • Commitment to continuous learning, active contribution and rapid adaptation in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with a collaborative working style
Ideally, you’ll also have
  • Previous R&D tax experience is not necessary but is advantageous
