London | £90-110k base + discretionary bonus + benefits

A large financial services organisation is looking for a hands-on Java Software Engineer to take meaningful technical ownership across business-critical systems.
This is more than a pure coding role. You'll be close to architecture and engineering decisions, helping shape how services are designed and delivered while still getting hands-on with modern Java and distributed backend systems.
What You Will Be Doing:- Design and build resilient backend services using modern Java technologies.
- Take technical ownership of solutions from design through to production.
- Work on distributed, service-based architectures where scalability, availability and maintainability matter.
- Help engineering teams make sensible design choices, balancing technical quality against real business requirements.
- Improve automation across software build, testing and deployment.
- Work closely with engineers, architects and business stakeholders to turn complex requirements into pragmatic technical solutions.
- Progressing to a future Technical Lead
- Strong hands-on Java development capability in production environments.
- Solid understanding of microservices, distributed systems and software design principles.
- Experience building applications in cloud environments.
- Good working knowledge of relational databases.
- A strong grasp of production engineering concerns such as performance, resilience, automation and scalability.
- Confidence contributing to technical direction, mentoring engineers and explaining engineering decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
- Exposure to technologies such as Spring Boot, Kafka or Kubernetes would be useful, as would experience with newer AI technologies, but I've deliberately avoided reproducing the complete source stack because that combination increases identification risk.
