Backend Developer, Cloud Engineer - Software
Job Title: Mid-Level Software Engineer (Backend and Integrations)
Location: London (Hybrid)
Department: Technology, Infrastructure
Type: Full-time, Fixed-term (12-month contract)
The Role:We are looking for a mid-level Software Engineer with a backend and integration focus to join Infrastructure Services. Your main focus will be building the backend services for charging software for electric aircraft, including the integration with a partner eVTOL charging company's systems.
A frontend developer is already working on this, so you will do a lot of the backend heavy lifting and work side by side with them to deliver a joined-up product. You will also contribute to one or two other areas of work within Infrastructure Services as priorities require.
This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to get stuck in. You will be a visible, confident technical voice for Skyports with external partners, and you can expect to travel within the UK a couple of times during the contract, with the possibility of some overseas trips.
Key Responsibilities:- Build the backend
. Design, build and maintain the backend services and APIs behind our charging orchestration software. - Own the charging integration. Lead the technical integration with a partner eVTOL charging company's systems, from agreeing interfaces and data models through to testing and troubleshooting with their engineers.
- Work with real-time data
. Build reliable, event-driven services that handle live charging and operational data, with sensible handling of failures, retries and monitoring. - Build the platform. Provision and manage the Azure infrastructure our services run on using Terraform, and help shape the shared platform, deployment pipelines and observability used across Infrastructure Services.
- Collaborate closely. Work with the project's frontend developer, product and operations colleagues to turn requirements and user flows into working features.
- Represent Skyports externally
. Take part in meetings and workshops with partners, aircraft manufacturers, operators and consortium members, explaining our approach clearly and helping to resolve technical issues. - Support other work. Contribute to one or two other areas of Infrastructure Services work as priorities require.
- Maintain quality. Write tested, documented, maintainable code, take part in code reviews and make effective, responsible use of AI coding agents to speed up delivery.
- Travel occasionally
. Travel within the UK a couple of times during the contract to visit partner sites and Skyports locations, with the possibility of some overseas trips. - Get stuck in
. Pick up whatever is needed, including work outside your core area, and see it through.
Technical skills
- Backend development. Solid commercial experience building and running production backend services in Go, including databases and automated testing.
- Platform and cloud engineering. Hands‑on commercial experience with Azure (required), including identity and authentication, networking, storage and managed services. Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform, containerised deployments (for example Docker and Azure Container Apps), CI/CD pipelines, observability and running services reliably in production.
- API integration. Experience designing, consuming and integrating RESTful and/or gRPC APIs, with a good understanding of authentication, security and caching.
- Real-time and event-driven systems. Experience with Web Sockets, SSE or event streaming platforms such as Kafka or Azure Event Hubs.
- AI fundamentals and coding agents. A good grasp of AI and LLM fundamentals, and practical experience using AI coding agents (for example Claude Code, Git Hub…
