Responses that are incomplete or unclear will not receive credit. The Work Experience you list on the application must also include all recent and relevant experience (including volunteer or unpaid work if the duties/responsibilities directly related to the job you are seeking) in order for your application and supplemental application to be considered.
Experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 35‑hour week, unless specified otherwise. Prorated part‑time experience may be acceptable. Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations.
The Long Beach City College District is seeking a qualified and motivated individual for the role of Buyer. An incumbent performs moderately complex to complex technical duties in purchasing a wide array of equipment, materials, supplies and services. An incumbent is expected to provide customer‑responsive, cost‑effective and high‑quality purchasing services for customers, consistent with applicable legal requirements.
The successful candidate traits:
- Strong ability to analyze procurement needs, interpret requirements, and apply applicable laws and policies.
- Skilled in conducting competitive bidding, evaluating quotations, and making sound award recommendations.
- Effective vendor research, assessment, and relationship‑building to ensure quality and reliability.
- Competence in comparing products and services for cost‑effectiveness, suitability, and compliance.
- Clear and professional communication skills for working with departments, vendors, and stakeholders.
- Sound judgment, priority‑setting, and independent decision‑making within defined authority.
- Ability to resolve procurement issues with tact, diplomacy, and a customer‑service mindset.
- Proficiency with enterprise financial systems, standard business software, and accurate numerical calculations.
- Receive, review, and process high volumes of purchase orders by verifying accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
- Type of position: Full time (40 hours/week)
- Position Status: Permanent
- Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Location: Liberal Arts Campus (LAC), but will support both campuses
- Salary: $5,847.57 – $7,203.71 Monthly
- Eligibility list: Will be valid for 12 months once approved or ratified by the Personnel Commission. We reserve the right to use the established eligibility list for vacancies (permanent and temporary) in this classification as well as related classifications.
- Advanced salary placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis; however, requests are typically capped at Step 3.
