Role Overview

Curtin Maritime is seeking a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to join our team as we grow our company to the next level. We provide marine construction and dredging services to markets like utility agencies, military/federal, municipalities, public works, and other agencies.

The Site Safety and Health Officer is responsible for implementing and enforcing health, safety, and environmental plans on project sites. This person understands governing body requirements relating to workplace safety & project compliance and ensuring all components are addressed and observed within the scope of a project. Under the management of the HSSE Director, the SSHO works as part of Curtin Maritime's Marine Construction team.

The Marine Construction department is responsible for the management of projects.

Schedule
  • This role follows a 2 week on / 2 week off schedule rotation
Responsibilities
  • Implement and execute accepted project-specific plans, including accident prevention plans, environmental protection plans, site‑specific safety plans, injury and illness prevention plans, etc.
  • Act as On‑Site Company Safety Representative
Tasks and Duties
  • Implement and execute accepted project-specific plans, including accident prevention plans, environmental protection plans, site‑specific safety plans, injury and illness prevention plans, etc.
  • Formulate, create, and maintain site/contract safety plans specific to projects and/or contracts when necessary or required.
  • Efficient management of project safety and environmental submittals
  • Ensure proper employee, company, and subcontractor certifications are obtained and maintained.
  • Manage safety and health programs on‑site to ensure compliance with established policies, state/federal laws and OSHA regulations and act as the primary project contact for all health and safety and/or regulatory agency requests and inquiries
  • Determine, communicate, and document deficiencies and ensure they are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with team and customer in a clear and understandable manner about all status updates.
Act as On‑Site Company Safety Representative
  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with safety and health requirements
  • Communicate, educate, and train employees in safety awareness and specific safety requirements according to OSHA and EM385‑1‑1.
  • Conduct required meetings with all interested parties.
  • Conduct safety and health inspections and maintain associated documentation.
  • Recommend and implement control measures to reduce any liability or exposure from non‑compliance with various agencies, codes, and company procedures regarding environmental, health and safety standards in the workplace.
  • Participate in Incident Response and Reporting Systems and support incident investigation processes
  • Manage employee and customer situations: respond promptly to employee/customer needs, solicit feedback to improve service, respond to requests for service and assistance, and meet commitments promptly.
  • Complete administrative tasks assigned by Project Manager, as requested.
Skills, Qualification and Certifications
  • Minimum five years construction safety experience, or similar field.
  • Must have current U.S. Army EM 385‑1‑1 training and thorough knowledge of current 385‑1‑1 Safety and Health Requirements Manual.
  • OSHA 30‑hour Construction training courses
  • First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel) and ability to gain proficiency in company‑specific software
  • Required to have a valid Drivers License and a clean driving record
  • Required to pass pre‑employment drug test/physical/background check
