The Manager, Technical Workshop Operations, is the fully autonomous operational leader of the dedicated Mercedes‑Benz Repair Facility at Manheim Oceanside. This role is responsible for all aspects of workshop management, including technical operations, team leadership, compliance, and cross‑functional collaboration. The manager oversees an advanced diagnostics Field Engineer as well as a team of technicians and a parts advisor, while ensuring diagnostic capability at the Field Service Engineer level, and acts as the primary liaison with Field Service Engineers, Service Engineering, R&D, and other stakeholders.
The manager is accountable for achieving operational KPIs, reporting buyback findings, and driving continuous improvement to support MBUSA’s strategic objectives.
Responsibilities
- Lead all daily operations of the Repair Facility, ensuring through output targets and quality standards are met.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop a team including an Advanced Diagnostics Field Engineer, technicians, and a parts advisor, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee diagnostic activities, ensuring technical capability is maintained at or above Field Service Engineer level.
- Assign work based on skill, workload, and priority; monitor progress and provide technical guidance as needed.
- Interview, hire, train, and evaluate team members; manage performance and implement corrective actions as required.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex diagnostics and technical issues, validating root cause findings and ensuring effective resolution.
- Analyze and report on operational KPIs, buyback trends, and root cause findings to executive management and cross‑functional teams.
- Lead the facility’s response to systemic technical issues, collaborating with Field Service Engineers to initiate warranty claim review when appropriate.
- Act as the facility’s primary liaison with Service Engineering and RD for active issue investigations, providing technical documentation and vehicle access as required.
- Represent the facility in cross‑functional meetings, task forces, and strategic planning sessions.
- Coordinate with vendors (e.g., Consilio, Sedgwick) for document processing and vehicle logistics.
- Develop, implement, and monitor workshop KPIs to maximize efficiency, quality, and compliance.
- Ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications, auction requirements, and regulatory standards (including AB‑1755).
- Manage workflow using dealership management systems or equivalent, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
- Identify and resolve operational bottlenecks; recommend and implement process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Track and report operational KPIs, buyback findings, and warranty cost savings to internal stakeholders.
- Maintain dashboards and reporting tools for Product Technical Support, Engineering Services, and Legal.
- Communicate technical findings, repair status, and process improvements to management and relevant departments.
- Identify opportunities for process optimization and cost reduction, driving continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
- Lead change management efforts related to new technologies, processes, or compliance requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; technical or vocational training in automotive repair preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in automotive repair, with at least 3 years in a management or technical leadership role.
