Salary information:
The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $120,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position information The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Fire Plans Examiner to conduct plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulations and standards, as adopted by the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). This position may represent the campus in interactions with municipal fire departments.
This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.
Responsibilities- Facilitate, coordinate and track individual plan review/approvals to a timely and code-compliant conclusion. Serve as a CSU Chancellor’s Office representative to resolve issues related to fire and panic safety code and regulations. Tracking will include use of OSFM and CPDC’s project database software.
- Engage all stakeholders. Coordinate CSU OFS/OSFM fire safety reviews and approvals, whether directly agency to agency or as authorized by CSU OFS/OSFM MOU.
- Work with the CSU Fire Safety Board (FSB) of outside expert counsel on fire safety and code compliance, including external peer review of major capital projects.
- Ensure code-effective design development and advocate good code compliance practices to campus project design teams and external plan review consultants.
- Participate in code compliance design reviews and implement the fire safety plan review process at campus and CSU/OSFM locations as needed to realize timely project approvals.
- Promote high standards for client service, resource use, workplace safety, professional development, accountability, and continuous improvement; communicate model campus practices systemwide.
- Propose changes to fire and life safety policies to assure compliance; evaluate and implement procedures to raise awareness of fire, life and panic safety requirements.
- Participate in the preparation and delivery of CSU fire safety code compliance training.
- Pursue ongoing education to maintain professional certifications and stay current with changes to fire and building codes (e.g., NFPA, ICC).
- Educational background:
California Licensed Architect, or Fire Protection Engineer, or related bachelor’s degree or other relevant experience in design/construction/compliance. Comparable training includes ICC Fire Plans Examiner, Building Plans Examiner, Fire Inspector, California State Fire Marshal or local fire authority plans examiner. - Industry experience: 3+ years in architecture, engineering, construction with a broad project range.
- Field experience: 3+ years of plan review and/or supervision of construction projects including fire, life, and panic safety code compliance. May be concurrent with industry experience.
- Good knowledge of fire protection planning and management, building design incorporating fire, life, and panic safety systems, and testing.
- Working knowledge of California Building Code, California Fire Code, and NFPA reference standards.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to work with diverse constituencies and senior management.
- Ability and willingness to travel locally and statewide as needed, including overnight travel.
- Strong judgment, initiative, and problem-solving to address complex code compliance issues.
- Ability to communicate technical policy clearly and develop professional relationships.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook, Bluebeam or equivalents.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Ability to rapidly learn CSU policies and procedures, contract law, and related regulations.
