Overview

This position description outlines essential functions for the RN role in a long term care facility. The duties described are not necessarily all-inclusive and may be adjusted as needed to meet resident care requirements and regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Administrative Functions: Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day-to-day nursing activities; participate in developing, maintaining, and updating policies and procedures; ensure reference materials are current; keep Nursing Service Procedures Manual current; ensure compliance with procedures; provide written and oral reports; review policies and job descriptions; coordinate nursing services with other resident services; participate in the facility’s quality assurance program;

    participate in surveys and discharge plan updates; plan nursing services for resident discharges; meet with staff to plan services; admit, transfer, and discharge residents; complete incident reports; interpret policies to personnel and external parties; perform administrative duties and protect resident information and facility data.
  • Committee Functions: Attend committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assurance, etc.); prepare reports; provide information to committees; participate in Care Plan Committee activities; implement committee recommendations.
  • Personnel Functions: Maintain adequate staffing with licensed personnel and CNAs; develop work assignments; delegate authority and accountability; ensure staff training; supervise daily rounds; monitor absenteeism; ensure policy compliance; manage interdepartmental relationships; foster a warm and safe unit environment; participate in staff performance evaluations and staffing decisions; administer disciplinary actions fairly.
  • Nursing Care Functions: Inform staff of admissions; prepare rooms; greet and orient new residents; accompany rounds with physicians; assist in planning care with residents and families; monitor resident status daily; ensure direct nursing care by qualified personnel; review nursing notes for accuracy; perform direct nursing tasks as needed; manage IVs, specimens, vitals, admissions/transfers/discharges; coordinate care with physicians and families; supervise and adjust care plans;

    manage restraints per policy; oversee medication administration and documentation; inspect care areas; ensure responsive resident calls; coordinate transportation for discharges; notify families of deaths.
  • Staff Development: Develop and conduct in-service training; support annual training programs (OSHA, HIPAA, etc.); plan clinical supervision for nurse aides; participate in continuing education to maintain licensure.
  • Safety and Sanitation: Develop safety standards; identify exposure risks and ensure training; ensure PPE availability and proper use; enforce hand hygiene; lead fire safety and disaster drills; participate in infection control programs; ensure reporting of hazardous conditions; ensure safe operation of equipment; maintain MSDS records; promote safe lifting and equipment use.
  • Equipment and Supply Functions: Advise on equipment and supply needs; maintain adequate stock levels; assist in preventive maintenance; ensure safe operation of equipment; monitor supply use; ensure MSDS documentation for hazards.
  • Care Plan and Assessment Functions: Contribute to assessments and care plans; involve residents in planning; review goals and revisions; ensure care plan awareness among staff; coordinate MDS planning including RAPs/Triggers; ensure care aligns with plan and resident wishes.
  • Budget and Planning Functions: Monitor economic conditions; recommend nursing service adjustments; identify equipment needs; report suspected fraud or false billings.
  • Supervisory Requirements: Assist in overall supervision of nursing staff; exercise administrative authority and accountability as an RN.
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: Nursing degree from an accredited college or university; training in rehabilitative/restorative nursing; 2+ years of experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
