Position: Substitute School Nurse (2025-2026 School Year)

Overview

Substitute School Nurse  School Year) – Long Branch Public Schools. Pay rate - $250/day. All applications will be reviewed by Administration. If selected, you will be contacted for a Virtual Meet & Greet. If recommended for substitute employment, you will receive additional paperwork to complete the application process. Final candidates will be recommended to the Superintendent of Schools for Board approval.

Qualifications
  • Valid New Jersey School Nurse Certificate
  • Demonstrated expertise in school health nursing practice and emergency procedures
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current health issues, and wellness education
  • Knowledge of community health and social services resources and ability to communicate effectively with non-school health professionals and social service agencies
  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
  • Such other qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate
Essential Function

To promote health and safety in the school environment and provide health services to students, faculty and staff, and to assist with the teaching of sound health practices. The school nurse must be able to move throughout the building, go up and down stairs, and navigate the entire school facility and grounds if necessary.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Report to the Building Principal upon arrival at school at least 15-30 minutes before the official school opening
  • Work in cooperation with the school physician, other school health professionals, staff, parents and community health professionals to ensure a healthy school climate and to minimize absence due to illness
  • Conduct health services and screening programs as required by law and/or Board policies
  • Schedule and supervise health surveys of students and staff; assist the school physician and nurse practitioner with physical examinations, make referrals, and conduct follow-up activities
  • Provide emergency care in case of sudden illness and administer first aid in case of injury to students or staff; ensure availability and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment
  • Maintain up-to-date health records on all students and immunizations, ensuring confidentiality
  • Help prevent and control communicable disease through assessments, inspections, exclusion and re-admission procedures
  • Notify principal or designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil under influence of alcohol or other drugs
  • Advise students, parents, and staff on health and safety matters; participate in development and implementation of the district emergency and crisis management plan
  • Assist in identification and placement of students with disabilities who need special education services
  • Participate in development of a comprehensive health education curriculum and serve as a health/safety resource for teachers
  • Promote a healthy/safe school environment and report problems promptly to the principal
  • Administer prescribed medication to students in accordance with law and Board policy; provide training and supervision of epinephrine administration for designated staff
  • Collaborate with community and non-school health agencies to meet health needs of children and families
  • Provide special health care and related services for students with disabilities, including 504 Plans
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education and professional development; maintain CPR certification as required
  • Prepare health and safety reports as required by law or as requested by the principal
  • Report any suspicion of child abuse to the Division of Youth and Family Services
  • Utilize the Professional Nursing computer daily
  • Performs other appropriate duties as required by law or by supervisor
