At Rethink Mental Illness, we believe that strong communities change lives. Through our Together Derbyshire programme, we're creating opportunities for people to build meaningful connections, access support, and feel part of their local community. We're looking for a Community Builder who is passionate about bringing people together, strengthening local networks and helping communities thrive. This is a rewarding role for someone who loves meeting people, building relationships and turning ideas into action.

You'll spend time out in communities, connecting with residents, volunteers, partner organisations and local groups to reduce isolation and increase opportunities for people to participate, contribute and belong. About the role As a Community Builder, you'll use an asset-based community development approach to identify strengths, connections and opportunities within local neighbourhoods. You'll work alongside residents, volunteers, community groups and partner organisations to:

  • Build and strengthen local social networks
  • Increase opportunities for volunteering and community participation
  • Connect people with local groups, activities and support
  • Develop new community-led initiatives
  • Support people experiencing social isolation to build meaningful connections
  • Help communities identify local priorities and create sustainable solutions
  • Promote community resilience, wellbeing and inclusion

You’ll also help map local community assets, support volunteer-led projects and maintain records that demonstrate the impact of the service.

What you'll be doing
  • Developing strong relationships with residents, community organisations and local partners
  • Identifying existing community assets, groups and opportunities
  • Supporting the creation and development of new groups and activities
  • Encouraging and promoting volunteering opportunities
  • Facilitating connections between people, services and community resources
  • Supporting community leaders and volunteers with information, guidance and encouragement
  • Working with partners across Derbyshire to strengthen local community offers
  • Helping community groups access resources and funding opportunities where appropriate
  • Gathering information and recording outcomes to demonstrate impact

We're looking for someone who is naturally curious about people and communities and enjoys building trusted relationships.

You’ll bring:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience of partnership working and stakeholder engagement
  • Confidence facilitating groups, meetings or community activities
  • A good understanding of local communities and community assets
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Experience supporting volunteering, community development or engagement activities
  • The ability to work independently in a field-based role
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, confidentiality and data protection principles
