Job Description

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. The Longmont, CO office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Staff Geological Engineer to join our growing Mining team. We are looking for a motivated candidate with an interest in developing both field and analytical skills, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning and performing geotechnical investigations, including preparing work plans, scopes, and field programs.
  • Document and report the results of geotechnical investigations, for example:
  • Log soil and rock test borings
  • Perform in‑situ testing (such as packer / hydraulic conductivity)
  • Install monitoring wells and geotechnical instrumentation
  • Single and multi‑well testing
  • Collect laboratory testing samples of soil, rock and water
  • Lidar scanning
  • Prepare field reports
  • Assist in field work at inactive mine sites, surface and underground
  • Site photographs
  • Sketches of structures and conditions
  • Notes and documentation of observations by the team
  • Prepare field and safety gear
  • Research of geology and historical mines
  • Assist in ground support calculations
  • Perform geotechnical instrumentation monitoring.
  • Perform construction observation, including materials testing and field documentation.
  • Assist in preparing reports, plans, and specifications, including construction documents.
  • Create basic plans and figures using GIS, Google Earth, and/or AutoCAD.
Required Skills and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in geology, geological engineering or mining engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience.
  • Qualified to acquire or has already acquired the GIT/EIT certification with future ability to become a Licensed Professional Geologist or Engineer.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel out of state for several weeks at a time. (Travel can be up to 70% of time in any given year and varies seasonally).
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside.
  • Ability to work in a variety of rugged environments including high‑altitude basins, underground abandoned mines, and in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Ability to drive company vehicles on 4x4 roads in mountainous terrain.
  • Willingness to work at both surface and underground mines, including active and abandoned mine sites. MSHA, HAZWOPER and other required training will be provided. Night shift work may be required.
