Responsibilities
  • Conduct tests of highway construction materials, make calculations and record results.
  • Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Inspect complex maintenance and construction‑related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.
  • Operate light and heavy equipment; perform preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment; perform roadway maintenance.
  • Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, help the public and perform other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
  • Serve as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for a medium to large construction project or for several small projects.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience:

    4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Commercial Driver License (class

    A) or must obtain within 120 days.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Subject to hazards – moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Medium work:
    Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Crouching – bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Standing – prolonged periods of time.
  • Close Visual Acuity – using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts.
  • Visual Acuity – operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity – determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
