Job Overview
At Komatsu Mining, we are committed to creating equipment that maximizes productivity, safety, and sustainability in the mining industry. With global operations and a legacy of innovation, we are advancing the next generation of electric propulsion and heavy equipment drive systems that will transform how mines operate. If you're ready to make an impact, join our team and help shape the future of mining.
As a Senior Drive System Engineer in our Loading Business Unit focused on Electric Wheel Loaders (EWL), you will lead the development of cutting-edge electric and mechanical driveline systems. You will be instrumental in defining the system architecture, integrating electric motors, gearboxes, axles, drive lines, and diesel engine-hybrid interfaces to deliver world-class performance, reliability, and efficiency. You will collaborate across engineering disciplines, manufacturing, suppliers, and field support to bring new products from concept through production and beyond.
Key Job Responsibilities- Lead the design, development, and validation of drive systems for Komatsu's EWL product line — including electric traction motors, gearboxes, axles, and drive lines.
- Define and optimize powertrain layouts integrating heavy-equipment diesel engines, hybrid or electric drive architectures and mechanical subsystems.
- Generate system-level requirements, perform modeling/simulation (thermal, structural, dynamic), and guide component specification and integration.
- Collaborate closely with Systems Engineering, Electrical/Controls Engineering, Manufacturing, Product Management and Service teams to ensure alignment of design, cost, manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability.
- Lead prototype builds, system and field testing, analyze data and drive root-cause investigations and continuous improvement.
- Prepare technical documentation — including design specifications, DFMEAs, DVP&R, test plans, and validation reports.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership in the drive systems engineering discipline.
- Contribute to the technology roadmap for next-generation EWL drive system architectures, driving innovation, efficiency, and maintainability.
- Serve as the SME for powertrain and driveline systems, providing advanced technical support to Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain.
- Assist manufacturing teams with production build issues, component validation, and system integration challenges.
- Partner with Quality Engineering to resolve non-conformance, warranty, and supplier performance issues, using data-driven analysis and engineering judgment.
- Support Supply Chain and Procurement in supplier qualification, component reviews, and technical evaluations to ensure drive system components meet Komatsu standards.
- Lead technical reviews for changes to powertrain components or sub-systems to maintain product reliability and compliance.
- Participate in cross-functional problem-solving teams focused on improving driveline performance, manufacturability, and field serviceability.
Required:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience in the design and development of mobile electric and mechanical drive systems (electric motors, gearboxes, axles, drive lines) for off-highway or heavy equipment.
- Proven experience working with heavy-equipment diesel engines, powertrain layouts, and mechanical integration in a mobile environment.
- Strong skills in system-level design, simulation/modeling, component specification, supplier management, prototype testing, and field support.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills; ability to lead cross-functional technical teams.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in mechanical, Mechatronic or related engineering field.
- Experience in electric/hybrid propulsion systems for heavy equipment or mining applications.
- Familiarity with design tools (CAD, FEA, dynamic simulation) and processes typical within Komatsu (design for manufacturing, reliability testing, product validation).
