Entry Level Police Officer

Immediate opening! The Longview Police Department is in the process of adding to our current entry-level Police Officer eligibility list.

The City of Longview requires entry-level candidates to first go through Public Safety Testing (PST) to complete a written exam and physical abilities test before continuing in the application process. If you have not taken the PST written and physical ability tests, please do not submit an application at this time. Please only fill out and submit an application if you received a passing score from PST.

Your application will be used in the background process. Please complete each section carefully and thoroughly, including all work history and education. You may also list voluntary positions as work history if you wish.

• Patrol Officer - Training (first 6 months): $7,501 per month
• Patrol Officer - Base Salary (after 6 months): $7,896 - $9,704 per month

This position involves first-line duties in protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, maintaining peace, apprehending criminals, controlling non-criminal conduct, and providing community services. Police protection is provided 24 hours a day, with officers assigned to 8, 9, or 10-hour shifts depending on the schedule.

Responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas by vehicle, bicycle, or foot; monitoring properties; managing traffic; responding to calls; investigating crimes; and performing public relations and community safety work. Officers may also assist in emergency first aid and lifesaving efforts.

Selection is based on civil service rules, including a written exam, physical agility test, and oral interview. Candidates must:

• Be at least 21 years old (minimum of 20 ½ to test)
• Be a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Successfully complete a 720-hour basic training academy during initial employment
• Possess or obtain a State Department of L&I Basic First Aid Card within 90 days
• Be certified or able to be certified in the operation of a breathalyzer within 90 days

If you do not have an AA degree or higher upon appointment, you will be required to obtain an associate degree within four years after completing your probationary period (first 18 months).

Knowledge: American government, judicial process, laws and ordinances, law enforcement policies, criminal investigation principles, police administration, firearm use and care.

Physical: Ability to drive safely under various conditions, lift and carry objects, stand, walk, run, observe surroundings, operate firearms, climb stairs/ladders, and perform emergency response actions. Visual and coordination skills are essential.

Mental: Ability to read and write in English, communicate effectively, exercise good judgment, handle stressful situations, maintain professionalism, work extended hours, and adhere to ethical standards.

Officers are exposed to physical and psychological hazards, adverse weather, and potentially dangerous situations. Must be mentally alert and able to respond to emergencies, including working evenings and holidays.

The incumbent operates patrol vehicles, firearms, handcuffs, mace, baton, computers, fingerprint kits, cameras, and other law enforcement tools.
