The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is currently seeking a Veterinarian to join our team. This is a full-time, FLSA exempt opportunity.

Since 1897, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) has been caring for the animals of Southwest Washington. Today, we are the largest animal welfare agency in Southwest Washington with campuses in Vancouver and Longview, where we help thousands of adoptable pets find shelter, TLC, and loving homes. Through programs like free pet food, emergency shelter, financial assistance, and medical care, we provide critical support that helps pets in need stay home with the families they love.

Thanks to our hardworking staff and volunteers, we serve more than 10,000 pets each year. At our Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), we provide high‑quality, subsidized care to the pets of income‑qualified families in our community. The CVC expands access to preventative care and spay/neuter, provides care for treatable conditions, and offers essential support to keep pets happy and healthy.

Our mission is to rescue, return, restore, rehome, and reconnect one animal at a time. That work is possible thanks to the dedicated teams of staff and volunteers who are here for the animals every day. We are committed to a diverse, healthy, and engaged team of employees and volunteers who strive for excellence, treat one another with kindness, and provide quality and compassionate care for the pets and people we serve.

Role Overview

The HQHVSN Veterinarian supports the Humane Society for Southwest Washington’s mission by providing high‑quality, high‑volume surgical services in the Longview Community Cat Clinic. This role is central to the organization’s Shelter‑Neuter‑Return (SNR) and community cat strategy to reduce feline overpopulation and lower shelter intake over time. The position focuses exclusively on spay/neuter and minor medical care for owned cats, community cats, and feral cats.

The veterinarian will ensure adherence to HQHVSN standards and oversee a small, efficient team of technicians, assistants, and volunteers to achieve surgical goals while maintaining quality, safety, and compassion in every procedure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform a minimum of 40 feline spay/neuter surgeries per day using HQHVSN techniques.
  • Conduct pre‑surgical physical exams and determine surgical candidacy.
  • Ensure appropriate anesthetic, analgesic, and perioperative care for all patients.
  • Diagnose and manage post‑surgical complications as appropriate.
  • Oversee controlled substances, maintaining compliance with DEA and state regulations.
  • Maintain clear and accurate patient records in accordance with HSSW protocols.
  • Supervise and train technicians, veterinary assistants, and volunteers.
  • Promote efficiency, safety, and positive morale among the clinic team.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Veterinary Services, Lead Veterinarians, and other departments.
  • Participate in the review and development of medical and surgical protocols.
  • Contribute to HSSW’s community cat and SNR programs through consistent surgical output.
  • Provide insight into trends in community cat health and surgical needs.
  • Support the integration of community medicine principles into operations.
  • Communicate effectively with caregivers and the public.

This position is part of HSSW’s Veterinary Services Department and works in close collaboration with the Longview Site Director, Community Engagement Coordinator, and the Vancouver‑based Shelter Medicine and Community Medicine teams.
